Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Kohlrabi is fabulous sliced up and sauteed in a creamy white wine garlic sauce. Slice it raw and dip in Ranch dressing or Bleu Cheese. Grate it and add to coleslaw or in a broccoli salad. So many things to do with Rabi. I do find that the chookers do not eat it though....wonder why?

Well....off to spend my day in jury duty (YAY!!!

) Good thing I grew up in the courthouse as my mom worked there for 35 years and I know everyone....I should be dismissed as soon as selection starts. Maybe I can get home in time to actually put something in the ground in the garden. Giant pumpkins are doing great and can't wait to plant those and watch them grow. The chickens are going to be gaga over them!

haha good way to get out of jury duty lady!!! Now I'm hungry for Kohlrabi, darn it!

Good deal. Will have to get some for the east side of the run too come to think of it, for the Wheaten pen. Still can't dig a post hole here with the concrete ground, so may be forced to just pound in some T-posts for the four foot high end of the run. The rest will come off the top of the main run at 6 foot and slope down to the 4 foot side. I'll just make sure to keep the coop and the feeding in the high end, although, being 5'2", bending over to 4' won't be a really earth shattering feat!

Ok so I have a total of I think 6 2 month old roos. 2 are Black Coppers and 4 Blue Coppers. Both Black Coppers have feathered shanks but I dont think they have any on the toe. Are they fine to breed and show? Or get rid of them? I have noticed that I see more Blue Coppers have an abundance of leg feathering than Blacks. My Blues have so much leg feathers but my Blacks are hit and miss. I have noticed that on here as well.

26 week old BLACK copper ROO ...he has 1 white tip wing feather, 1 on each side and I would like to know if that is a permanent look for him

Poor guy, I promised to go later in the week.

THe vet suspected mereks but the age is a little young. 5 days old. So I'm treating for the worst and hoping for the best. Coccidia can also mimic many of the symptoms of mereks. SO I'm sanitizing like Mereks and treating with anticoccidia like its', well coccidia. We talked about culling but if I take them to UConn, they need them live. So I segregated the 3 notable ones. ANd then they proceeded to get better thru the afternoon!

2 OE and 1 cuckoo; the 2 OE were sick first and are running circles around the CM.

I'm thinking its the feed. Bought my usual brand that always worked well. SO no extras today. WIll add the probiotics to off set the sulfa drug. I laid down a cloth to provide some cushion now that all the shavings are removed and DH is burning. Oh, and vaccinate! Vet suggested this to protect anyone that hasn't been exposed. THat was a long conversation.

Found 3 things it could be: Mereks, coccidia, and riboflavin deficiency. Long weekend! Thanks again Debbi.
