Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Good luck Debbi! Hope you get some Wheaties! I was at my bestfriends house yesterday playing with her little Wheaten chicks that she just hatched out.....their little fluffy yellow butts are too cute. I had a hard time telling her that all 4 of them are cockerels.

Vicki ~ Let me tell you from experience. If you think it's a sprig, it is. I know I have stared at mine for weeks, hoping my eyes are just bad, hoping it was from a peck or some other boo-boo, hoping it would just plain FALL OFF! Nah, it ain't going anywhere, and it will get bigger. I hate it when that happens!!

As for the leaning point, they can straighten up. I've seen that too, so watch that one. So far, I've not had any combs flop over yet...

I say definitely cull. Yellow legs is hard to deal with where it is dominant. In the long run it will save you lots of time and money

Ok, I want your guys opinion on a 2 month old pullet. I have only been at this for a few months. She has a straw color hackles. And also is this yellow feet? She doesnt have any shank feathers. I say cull?

I agree with Vicki and I personally would cull for yellow in the legs.

haha..yeah, they are already banded to be culled, I just like to learn through watching things.

I read something interesting the other day on the Silkie thread, and it may very well apply here too. A breeder from Belgium states that the Silkies, and supposedly other breeds, can be sexed by the curve of their upper beak. The more rounded the arc or a curve, it's a male. The straighter the beak, female. I am going to see if that's the case with this hatch of Silkies, and if I ever get any Marans to hatch, will try it with them too. Anyone ever heard of this, or tried it??

In regards to the egg carton thing.... I started hatching in the egg cartons and stopped when I had several pip upside down and die. I started back up, because I had such good hatched in the egg cartons, and I think I have only had 1 pip upside down since starting back. I check them often to see if they have pipped upside down and lay them on their side if they are.

Debbi... we are going to be hatching buddies! Mine go into lockdown today too!

What is going on Pink with your hatch???????
