Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I've always seen Grisham lines listed as Jeane/Grisham. So, that would be my guess.

I just got a call from the post office and sounds like my birchen eggs are here! its killing me to wait til 8 to go get them and that's only 7 more minutes away haha!

Have you tried filling a bag with water and hanging it? I keep hearing that flies don't like them and avoid areas that have them. Of course this won't help with mosquitoes or other annoying bugs :(

I love it when folks stand staring at the numerous little baggies of water that I have hanging all over my front porch where the flies seem to love to congregate.
Before the baggies of water, they could be so thick you had to walk through with your mouth closed not open like Debbi described, LOL. *edited because I forgot to type a couple words*
Anyway, the bags of water do help, IMO.
I also hang a couple of them over the door ways and put a penny in each one. I don't know what the penny is about or why, but the ones that I didn't put pennies in at first didn't keep flies away, the flies would land on the baggies and just hang around. Put a penny in each one and BOOM BABY!

Anyone know what the penny is all about?

Will say that the fly population around here this year has drastically decreased, DH contributes it to the massive downsizing that I have done with the birds. I hate to say this......but I think he may be right this time.

I hate it when that happens! I will try the bags with a penny today, it sure can't hurt! You don't want to walk around here with your mouth open! That is unless you like fly appetizers!

Congrats on your eggies Vicki! You will love them!

I candled a few of them yesterday and looks like we've got some babies growing.

When I put my hand on one and went to lift it out of the tray to candle, my finger went right through it.....and I'll give you one guess as to how it smelled.

The last couple of days I knew I could smell something in there, but with over 7 dozen eggs in it, I had a hard time trying to locate it. PHEW!!!!!!

Moving a few (like 6-8 I think, can't remember exactly) Marans to lockdown today and finally also locking down, 12 all squirming around in their eggs, Barnevelders. Finally! This should be a good Barnie hatch.

Edited post about fly bags because I forgot a couple words and it read that a person had to walk around with the mouth open.........eeeewwwwww! Sorry, I've been up most of the night as I couldn't sleep and feeling a bit loopy right now.

yikes...I have been lucky and never had a rotten egg in this sportsman and hope to keep it that way! I just got done unpacking them and you are right. I love them! Took me a while to get them all unpacked since two eggs were smashed and egg yolk was everywhere. Not a pleasant smell when the yolk has started to turn and small bad. I'll get a pic here in a minute and post them. I'm so happy! Now to be patient letting them set, then I'll put them in the incubator without turning them for a few days on sunday night. Oh, I'm so excited! I sure hope they hatch well!!!!

Congrats on the little developers you do have lady! This is going to be so much fun working on the birchens together.

Donna~ That broody is a silly girl! Sorry that she won't take the blue eggs.....what the heck is the matter with her?

Arielle~ Sorry for the loss of your birds.

WaaaaaaaaHOOOOOOOOT! Glad they arrived and that you love them! They seriously have great color for Birchens and for birds that are nearing their rest period. I have a feeling we are going to be very happy with these birdies from these eggies.

Alrighty, here's my eggies. 22 of them are ones that came from Rod, the two eggs in the top carton all the way to the right are the first eggs coming from my black birchen girls here. I'm happy to report, they are not doing too bad either!!!
