NEADS is a great service dog organization. They have several breeds including my favorite, the smooth collie. We bred working smooth collies for years until we closed the kennel in 2009. A couple went on to be service or assistance dogs.Arielle, that is a fantastic idea. I would guess he probably is a candidate for one on several levels. I'll have to check into it. He's going to be a double leg amputee, is blind and has diabetes, so the odds are pretty good. Thanks so much for the suggestion! The only hitch would be if he does qualify, would be getting the existing dogs to get along with a newbie.
Yeah, the marsh bird heritage ealy shows up when it's wet. Mine used to tromp around in the mud, ice, or snow. Didn't bother them, hee, hee. They had a nice warm, cozy coop with feed and water inside but just liked the wet, I guess.well...the rain came....and its been absolutely pouring! I shut up the birds I thought would be most in the path of the rain, but didn't think my oldest chicks were ones to worry about as they have a shelter by the south side of the barn they can go into....but what do they do? Go and run out into it and just stand there! They looked like drowned rats (and so did I) when I shooed them into their shelter and penned them in. What the heck....never been around birds that loved water so much in my life!
thats alright lady i totally understand. On the gypsy thing....I'm gonna need a refresher on the term...I haven't heard for quite a while.I moved 7 Marans pullets to the BIG Marans pen and they seem OK. It really is going to be the weekend before I can get you pics Vicki. Once they grow up some more and I get my pullets keepers picked they will have a permanent home. I am going to keep Pink's Pullet in with the roo she is with now. I have another bigger Blue pullet, no copper yet, I am going to keep with him too. I noticed a couple have that Gypsy look so they came from my BCM roo. Maybe the copper is coming from both pens. Both boys could color pullets. Pinks is lighter color so he lightening up my Dark girls and my BCM roos is a little over colored so he is throwing color too![]()
That gypsy thing is genetic and would not just POP up would it? The light blue roo and the BCM pullets none are gypsy looking. But the other pen has some gypsy pullets.
I agree....gonna look up some stuff here in a bit and see what's around this areaYour dad has quite a bit of recovery time ahead of him, getting on a waiting list now will be worth it. GL

Quote: THese are marsh birds?? I'm very wooded, and I caught the juveniles, 2 males and a hen, way off the beaten track by some 300 feet. Same area where my older birds cruised over the winter before put in the breeding pens. I moved the speckled sussex to a new location in hopes of reducing overlap of free range area. Best laid plans. . . .![]()
