Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

THese are marsh birds?? I'm very wooded, and I caught the juveniles, 2 males and a hen, way off the beaten track by some 300 feet. Same area where my older birds cruised over the winter before put in the breeding pens. I moved the speckled sussex to a new location in hopes of reducing overlap of free range area. Best laid plans. . . .

yup....where they were developed in France was a marsh area.

From the glossary in ASOP:
"GYPSY COLOR:
Very dark purple approaching black. Found in comb, face, and wattles of Silkies, Sumatras, Birchen and Brown Red Modern Games, and to a lesser degree in Sebrights."

I'm guessing 'gypsy face' is same as 'gypsy color'.

I'd guess as long as you are consistent and mindful in your matings....selecting matings with those darker birds on ones that are correctly colored and it will get you a long ways. You'll still have to decide whether or not to cull the offspring that remain darker in the matings. I would think those decisions will come from the attributes of the bird outweighs the color on their face and etc.

sounds like you got the extreme heat we had on monday I think. How are the birds faring so far lady?

I don't think its really sunk in exactly how many kitties we have....but I'm sure it will when they are more active. Luckily they are super cute, so they should be easy to give away. There's a lady not too far from me that had her barn burn down last year and they lost every animal in it because it happened when they weren't home, so they are building a new barn and already asked for several kitties for barn cats....so that should definitely help! haha

Yep today and tomorrow and then, slooowwwly getting back to more normal temps for June.
If this is what June is going to be like I'm SCARED of what August is going to look like...

I'm glad you you have a taker for a couple (or several!) kitties - going to be hectic in short order with all those "tigers and lions" in the barn!

Well, I'm glad you told us what the "gypsy" thing is, I've never heard that term, and was just about to ask.

Funny, my birds don't like to get wet, and they HATE the snow!! While they all have plenty of places to get out of the rain if they want to, mine all gather on my front porch...the woosies! Now the Silkies, they are a different story. They love standing out in the rain, and jumping in puddles, until they are soaked to the skin! Great in the summer, not so great in the winter!

yeah, I'm scared what August will be like too Katelyn. Although, now that its poured out, its 64 and I'm snuggled up with a cup of coffee and a blanket. It feels soooooo nice to be comfortable instead of frying, even if it will only last a day or two

Well, that's a good thing in Silkies and Showgirls! Not so great at all in Marans.
