Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Marcy~ I like his eye color, copper color and the amount of it. Looks like he will get a good amount more when he finishes maturing. Like his comb and his leg color too. Looks like he will be a keeper for a while longer. How old is he again?

He is somewhere between 3 and 4 months old I believe. I combined ages, the oldest were hatched 3/3/12, I think he is one of the older ones.

Day 19 and Broody Blue Copper Marans, Naima, actually got off her nest for a poop -- so I got to see the eggs!!! Looking good ....

OK black copper cockerel pic of the day! I think I need to start posting 2 per day or this is going to take too long! I need to thin out birds again soon, there is starting to be squabbling amongst the cockerels. So here is one I think I should NOT keep--he has a lot of black, no much color. I kept him because I was having trouble with so many of them having too much color on the breast, even at a young age, so I thought I'd keep a dark one. He must be going on 4 months now. What say you pinkchick and others? Should this one go? Oh, and he is holding his wing down like that because he is hot.
Here is cockerel #10:

Is this hen a Maran? She seems enormous compared to my other chickens, and she lays pretty dark coloured eggs.

Marcy, I'd toss that boy. He has mahogany hackles/saddles, and though I love that color once they mature, it is not correct. It will also not help the hackle color in the offspring, especially the pullets. He also looks roach backed to me, but that may be the way he is standing. Check him too for split wing. Even though it's hot and he's droopy , there shouldn't be a gap in the feathers like one is missing. JMO

haha...that's a mighty good stink eye look she's givin!

How are those splash boys you showed not too long ago doing lady?
That is one fugly looking Wheaten wanna-be!

Makes me wonder if they didn't use the Wheaten Pene to try to darken the eggs, and that's how the sports and the carnations are both cropping up?? I sure hope none of the 3 wee ones I have here pop one of those stupid combs! It's been really nice not having to look at them for a month!

Just got home from town awhile ago, and my old dog was sitting in the kitchen. That never happens, she loves her AC and couch too much, hmmm. Then I hear it...CRACK. POP. BOOM! Yup, the idiocie has begun. My two neigbor boys out by the pond setting off fireworks, in the midst of a field of 3 foot tall grass, and the wind is blowing at about 12mph in my direction! Their pond is only about 70 feet from my house on the west side of me! That was why the dog was in the kitchen fireworks freak her out, always have.
So I go out to the deck and yell out, nicely of course..."Hey guys, do you think that's wise with all this tall, dry grass around here?? I would hate to think I'd have to sleep in my truck tonight if my house burns down." Yeh, ok.. and off they went. Mean old woman that I am, but gees... Sorry to harsh your mellow boys!

Good thinking, Deb!! Kids often don't see the consequences when they can only see the fun of snap crackle, pop!! And nicely put!! Good effort!

Sure! It's fine to burn down YOUR house .... sheesh!

(But I have to give the boys credit, celebrating Canada Day that way. Long weekend here this weekend! Canada Day on Sunday - lay THAT on them if they keep it up!!!
