Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

The Lav. is the one that is smaller and feathering so slowly... I was hoping my broody would take her in... but she didn't... We almost lost her at hatch. She was stuck to the shell and the egg white has dried on her... I washed her twice and had to put her back in the bator. twice. I told Pete that she wasn't going to make it and I really thought I was going to come home from work to a dead chick... still strong and going.

Thanks Donna
I have a black ameraucana roo (sp?) ...Can I breed them to get splash? ( or is Lav is a seperate gene type?)

I also have a Blue? Roo

Pic of the day--I'm a little late today, but here is BCM cockerel #21. I like his color. His comb looks like a 5-point, although 2 points are kind of short. I'm not sure about his back, how the angle is, he looks a little hunched over, that may be from the heat, I am not sure. The blade on his comb does seem to follow his head and not stand away. How important is that? Again, not enough of a tail to evaluate. What do you all think? Keep or cull and why? #21:

Those are both EE sorry. The Lavender gene is different. It is recessive and requires two copies to show. Maybe you got a split in your hatch too. Keep an eye out for a black one with a pea comb. Did I give you EE eggs too? or just Marans and Ams? I bet that is what you got. So you may have a split in there somewhere. Breed her to him and you will get lavs the first hatch. Breed her ONLY to a black not a blue... IDKW exactly... it is just the rules

BTW I LOVE that blue roo.... so pretty.

Could anyone give me the name of a good incubator? I am thinking about hatching eggs. I have never done it before. Would like a good one but not overly big. Maybe 24-30 egg capacity. Would like one that is pretty much automated to do all the turning, etc. Thanks for any recommendations.
Brinsea. A bit expensive but it has a digital, automatic humidity setting, such a relief when incubating! I know members of MOAC get a 10% discount at Brinsea. Brinsea is having a summer sale, last time I looked. I own 2 of the Mini Advances. (6 eggs each). Next year I need to add a third bigger one because I will be hathcing more Sussex in the same time frame. I had good luck with the Brinsea with Marans.

This Lav gene in Marans. is it the blue Andalusian gene? Or the Orpington Blue gene or the Pigeon Blue gene or?
Thanks,
Karen

The Blue is Simon and he is such a flirt... Likes to give little love bites when I pet him.... Just starting to come into his hormones, so I have to watch him. He could get in my face soon...
Yup, you gave me 7 OE eggs with 2 JL blue eggs one Lav split..... were the blacks, black copper?
(what does the JL stand for again?)

the 3 blue ones are going to hatch either a black or a lavender. Did the others hatch? Do you remember? The letters just tell me who the roo was. So if the others hatched they are unrelated

PM me if you want to talk more. Since we are veering dangerously off course BTW the Olive Eggers could throw a clinker in the mix.
