Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I'm seriously thinking of snagging a Black Copper cockerel from my best friend and bringing him home for some test mating. He is a nice bird..minus his missing tail feathers that her other boys have plucked out. They are slowly growing back in and he doesn't look rumpless anymore. I hatched him out of some eggs that I hatched for the New Year's Day Hatch-A-Long. In haste I gave all the birds from that hatch to my bestie....now when I go over and visit I see him and want him back.

I will see if she can get some photos of him for us so I can share.....better yet, it's their turn to come over for dinner sometime soon, so maybe I will just get her to bring him along and I will get photos.

Funny! I've given away birds or sold them in haste as well and really can kick myself sometimes..

Vicki~ I read about the stinkers you found, bummer! I am crossing my fingers for you and a good hatch out of the remaining eggs. My Birchen babies are doing good. Will try for more photos of them if the day doesn't get too far away from me.

Donna~ The technical term for that sprig on Marcy's roo is a sprig. Sprigs are a DQ. I don't know why side sprigs are the only form a sprig that is identified and illustrated in the SOP book section for DQ's and faults.

Hey- did you happen to take photos of the darkest eggs your biddies gave you before you put them in the 'bator?

No, but maybe I can pop the bator open and get a pic

Thanks.

Once I figured out what side sprigs, or sprigs for short, were, I envisioned side sprigs as protrusions anywhere on the lateral planes of the blade. The ends of the comb fit into this. The photos probably show the most typical, and easiest to find good photo for publication.

A single comb is to be smooth all over.

I'm planning on building individual pens for my cockerels/roosters. How big would you make them? They are Black Coppers, not that it should make a difference. Thanks

Will you be using them as breeding pens at any point, in case you wanted to do test mating? If so then you would need to figure in extra space. We have some pens that are 3' wide by 3' high and roughly 24" to 30" deep and can house a rooster with 2 hens(depending on size) for when we are collecting eggs to incubate. HTH

Another 100* day here again, but at least there is supposed to be storms heading in for the next few days. Never thought I would welcome thunder storms, but I sure will if they bring some much needed rain!

Vicki, sorry to hear of your stinker eggs(s). Hope the rest pull through for you! Aren't they due this weekend??

Well, I sold the last of my Barred Rocks so that frees up a pen. Sad to see them go. They have been good and one of them was my favorite. It seems lately that I have gotten rid of all the chickens that give me the time of day. But now that I decided to step out from this just being a hobby and into a business, Im trying not to think about it. Now as I typically have hatched chicks in the spring what are the dos and donts at this time of the year? Getting eggs in a few days so I need to prepare. In March I needed a heat lamp, now its hot as heck out. The coops seem hotter thank god I have fans for them. So I take it there is no need for lamps? Whats the top temp where healthy chicks and chickens start to die?
