Yes, the heat has struck out here too! It hit 75 at my place on the river today. Nearly unbearable!

I'll be headed to Home Depot for an air conditioner

in the morning, as it is supposed to get up into the 80's tomorrow & sunday!

So far all the birds are doing good, but boy I've had some SERIOUSLY broody hens!

105 outside and food poisoning don't mix

The broody got dunked in the water pans we added again today and watered them down too. Rained for about 3 seconds but POURED up the road

Good news all the birds seem to be ok. The temps at night are in the upper 70's so that has helped. Tomorrow will make 10 days straight at over 100 and ALL days are record breakers, even the 10 days in a row. I think Sunday will still be over 100 or close and then the cold front and rain move in

Temps will drop to low 90's and upper 80's chance of rain EVERY DAY for the next 7 days

That is going to feel like heaven.... now if I can get over this

So I can clean pens, brooders and stuff.

I did set all my DARKEST eggs.... I think there were about 18. With this heat not sure about the fertility.... surprisingly I found some DARK eggs from my other pen.... usually I don't get dark dark eggs from them...that is why they are in the back pen.

Vicki my last batch of Marans I had 2 oozing eggs too... never had that before either. But all the others were ok and hatched pretty well.

Vicki~ I read about the stinkers you found, bummer! I am crossing my fingers for you and a good hatch out of the remaining eggs. My Birchen babies are doing good. Will try for more photos of them if the day doesn't get too far away from me.

Donna~ The technical term for that sprig on Marcy's roo is a sprig. Sprigs are a DQ. I don't know why side sprigs are the only form a sprig that is identified and illustrated in the SOP book section for DQ's and faults.

Hey- did you happen to take photos of the darkest eggs your biddies gave you before you put them in the 'bator?

HEAT?!?!?! Where????? In our neck of the woods? Nah!

80* does not constitute an air conditioner.........the mercury needs to atleast break 90* before it is unbearable.

Good luck with your broodies. Are you going to let them sit on eggs?

3riverschick~

Hi Karen!

Black tailed Buffs.....you are familiar with them right? I have a question for you if you don't mind. Should the males have shafting in the breast feathers like that of a Welsummer hen, but slightly less noticeable?
My best friend has a male that popped up out of some eggs that we got near the beginning of the year and I am convinced he has Welsummer blood in him and she is convinced that he is a pure Black tailed Buff. All photos and information on them that I can find shows the males with a nice orangy rust colored chest with no shafting.

I will see if she can send me some photos so I can post them.

Thank you in advance.

I'm seriously thinking of snagging a Black Copper cockerel from my best friend and bringing him home for some test mating. He is a nice bird..minus his missing tail feathers that her other boys have plucked out. They are slowly growing back in and he doesn't look rumpless anymore. I hatched him out of some eggs that I hatched for the New Year's Day Hatch-A-Long. In haste I gave all the birds from that hatch to my bestie....now when I go over and visit I see him and want him back.

I will see if she can get some photos of him for us so I can share.....better yet, it's their turn to come over for dinner sometime soon, so maybe I will just get her to bring him along and I will get photos.

Mel is back! Or maybe I just need to read thru all these posts....
I have some beautiful pullets growing out. Every time I go outside, I feel proud.
And those eggies are looking pretty nice, too.
That said, I will keep you all in suspense, because I am lazy, and hate posting pictures.
I still owe Math ace pics from months ago.
And the heat is not making me feel any more motivated.
Have a good weekend, all.
