Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Marcy, having the BC and blue Copper explains a lot about the range of faults. I bought Black Austrolorp eggs from Pwells several times. I know nothing about his BC though, Have seen them on ebay.

Just did another round of changing out water and finally resorted to dunking a few of the birds for a couple of seconds. I think tomorrow it will be back down to 92 finally, and then in the 80s for a few days. I sure hope the birds make it through. Lost 2 birds through this string of heat and that was more than enough. Neither were Marans luckily.

I found another oozing egg in the hatcher...so its not looking good. It was one of the darker ones my candler wasn't able to see through. I sure hope there are some good eggs in there still. 10 eggs left. I have that sinking feeling in my stomach

Here are my promised close-up pics of the comb sprig on BCM cockerel no. 7 (destined for the freezer):

Can someone tell me the TECHNICAL name for this? It is not a sprig as that is not in the APA SOP I have and is definitely NOT a Side Sprig as described in the APA. Is it a fault or a DQ?

Is it coming out the side? and I can't tell?

for you Vicki!

Hi Karen, thanks for taking the time to look that up. Now that you mention it, I do remember him including some information about the seeds in the box. I had forgotten all about that.
Cool.Maybe get back to him and let him know how the birds worked out for you. I love hearing how my birds worked out at new homes.

Blech....I think we've been receiving your heat - today was unbearable and tomorrow is supposed to be 96, plushumidity...
I'm really worried about my guys, too...

Do you find dunking them helps??

I think cool water definitely does - These days, I seem to spend all day going around, checking everyone and giving them new, cool water...and worrying about them and the horses...

Hope your last 10 eggs do just fine - when are they "due?"

I finally did the dunking just because I had three of my mid sized cockerels that were not doing well at all. They were laying on their sides and breathing irratically, so I just filled up a bucket with water that wasn't too cold and just put them in for a couple of seconds and it made such a difference. I just got back in from shutting up all the birds last night and they looked just fine. I hope I caught them in time and that they don't have delayed reaction to the heat. Its just been so many days of extreme humidity and heat that its really starting to take a toll. I think tonight its gonna get down to 74....it hasn't been that cool in a long while!

Hatch day is supposed to be Monday, but usually hatches run a day early here, so I'm hoping for Sunday since I'll be around for some of it. I just sooo hope I got all of the stinkers out of there. I've never had an egg ooze like that, so it was kind of shocking to find two of them!
