If you can wait, I will try to make a run to Nebraska and BORROW some birds.

I just hatched out some BCM eggs and was noticing that some have more white on them than others. My question is does this indicate anything or will it all come out in the wash? (I did notice that the last few to hatch had more white on them than the others) Silly coincidence??

(There are Ameraucanas and Olive Eggers in this pic as well)

I had a chick that hatched with lots of white, but mainly black. Today she is 12 weeks old and she is the blackest bird out of the three blacks I have lol. It washes out eventually... this one did have me thinking she was a roo though. She feathered in very slowly and the wattles on her were big... but she is a certainly a girl now.

And this leads me to another question for the experts lol. When should I expect her comb to turn red? It looks mostly black with now. She is 12 weeks as I stated before..........

Good morning all

I agree about the amount of white on the chicks. All the chicks that I have hatched here, some with a lot of white, more so than your chick, Elisha, all turned out very dark with no coppering. One of the hens, and by the way they were all hens, finally got a smidge of copper after her adult molt. She also got white eyebrows!! She is gone, but not for that fact alone, she had comb issues too. The others are still here. One is Olivia, who is still sooooo jet black, the other is her daughter also very dark black with powdery feeling feathers. Olivia also had a very dark, almost black comb right up until point of lay. If I recall, she was about 25 weeks old before it reddened up. Her daughter is looking the same right now at 8.5 weeks old.

...and HOOORAY!!!! I am finally free of house chickens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The yellow jackets delayed the task for a few days, but the chicklets spent their first night out in the coop last night! Was beginning to think that was never going to happen...

There really is no way to control the leaking darker blue feathers that happen on the blue or the Splash. I personally do not worry about it when I have it on a Blue Copper, some may cull for it as they do not like it on their birds.........but seriously.......I think when it doesn't happen it is just pure luck. I think that it (the leaking) should be overlooked at this early stage of the breeding game with Marans, they have too many other faults and defects that we should work with first.
