Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Vicki, I see that the female Marans in the pictures have nice dark Soft feathering. The young male looks to have the unwanted Brown soft feathering below the vent area. This will breed forward if it is indeed brown soft feathering.

He is from a black to blue copper mating and was thinking of using him with the blues. Think it would throw a hitch into the blues? His mother is a big ol' beast, but don't want to muck up the blues if the brown tone will affect them.

Also on your comment previously about the back being off on the back of the BC...you mean the cockerel? I caught the photo as he was coming out of a dust bath, but I'll catch him up and give him a good look over and see

Here's a few more pics of the youngest hatches of the year for ya Don. I bribed them with some treats, so hopefully will give you a better idea of some of the body types on the girls. The cockerel is one of my other hopefuls. He is solid, but in his lanky stage with my favorite darker tone of copper. I just can't help loving it!

Your black copper hens have that beautiful green metallic sheen to them! Great breeding!

Vicki, All of these Marans look alike so not really anything I can say except good job working with them.

One question what is the low spot in the middle of the BC back. Something looks a little off there.

haha...I love hearing that they all look alike! The more consistency I have in the body type, the more I can tackle the smaller things that, while they have driven me nuts before, had to be lower on my priority list to get the body type the way I like.

Thanks! Its definitely something I'm mindful of in my breeding program. One of the benefits of being raised and taught by a long time poultry breeder.

Vicki, check the wing spread on the dark pullet in the first picture. Has a pink band.
Alright, sure can. It was hot yesterday when I took the photos, so some were drooping and holding out their wings. I know which one she is, so let me change out of work clothes and I'll get back with ya here in a bit

Hey Don, caught up that pullet and checked both the wings and they look normal. Has the axial and the primaries and secondaries. I'll keep an eye on her as she develops more ( made a note in my book) and will see how she does when she goes through juvie molt, which is not far off now.

Just as a side note, the first and second picture I posted this morning are of the same girl if that helps to see her normal wing carriage (2nd photo).

Hi
frow.gif

I am very happy with my Black Coppers... But I was looking at my Cuckoos and am torn between 3 Roos... hatched june 7th
Could I get some opinions:

Roo #1:
Plus... He has a great looking comb, good shape
Minus... clean leg, blue cuckoo instead of the black, carries his tail too high.

Roo#2
Plus:good comb, little bit darker than #1
Minus:no leg feathers, still light and carries his tail high, bit of a wobble in the front of the comb

#3
Plus: Dark Black Cuckoo, leg feather, just a bit beefier than the other two
Minus: comb, tail seem high on him too, just not quite as high as the other two...

Thanks All
Patricia
