Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Ok, random question...has anyone else found that after either a black or blue copper hen over 2 years old molts, that they get copper in the neck collar when they feather back in? I've got two hens this has happened with.
Vicki, I have one that molted and in came very dark copper where there was none before, although it is very limited. I had another that had a tad of copper before molt, and now she is showing none! These others are black as pitch! Go figure...

Its one of those things that just takes time to learn about I suppose. I've noticed it on both a blue and a black...from totally different breeding

I have no experience with Delawares but I would assume if they are white, like all other white chickens, they may have either one in their makeup. It might be safe to assume the ones that tend to yellow as they age are carrying gold and the ones that tend to maintain their white better are based on silver.

I believe Delawares are silver based because they have been used against RIR (gold base) to create sex linked chicks. They would not be able to create sex links if they were also gold based.

Now, this is an interesting piece of info to know!

Same answer as barngoddess, BUT arrived at with a different way of thinking....

Sometimes the answer is not as important as the way a person goes about getting the answer.

haha, like I've said before, I don't know specifics of things like the coding in genetics, but give me some practical application and I'm good. Kind of like how I hated math class in school, but love using it to solve problems in everyday life.

They can be both, but typically silver because you can make sex links with them. I knew that one

Vicki, I believe we could breed the BC female out of the Splash an dBlue Copper back into them without a problem. I would never use a BC male regardless if he was from the Blue Copper and splash. The BC male from the Blue Copper and splash should be culled soon as they feather and you can see what color they are.
Hey Don,

can you explain your reasoning for not using a BC male out of the Blue or Splash copper mating, but being able to use the female BC? Just curious. I don't use the males, but just want to see if its the same as what I've found to be true in my time working with the coppers.

Vicki, When working with the parti colored fowl it is always best to use a male in the color you want the chicks. Best to look at post 41983 and you will see in this male why I dislike using the Black copper in the Blue copper matings. The only time the BC should be used is if there is nothing else left to work with, do not know if I would even use it then.

very good. On that blue copper male I posted the other day, what do you think of how he turned out? I have a long way to go with some parts before I'm happy, but I'm getting there on the evenness of the copper and better size of the bird itself.
