Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Haha
I seem to remember getting chastised for liking the mulberry faces in my Birchens by several, funny how things change haha

I like the looks but also understand it is not something to breed for in the Marans. Didn't you and Don say that the Mulberry faced ones produce better colored Birchens?

Congrats Kim! Can't wait to see the chicklie babies and the goslings.
I should get one box at the end of the week and the other at the beginning of the next. So will be cranking up the incubator again!

After my monsters finish drying out and are all fluffed up.......the 'bator is getting broken down and cleaned. Then it will be back up and running.

Are you getting 2 doz. BCM eggs?

I bought 26 eggs , but she also said she'd send extras, so hoping for 30. That way I have a chance of getting something decent to work with. I think gigantor makes better pullets, so lookin to balance the pen out more

Clearly, you're referring to me, since I just posted that I like the looks of Pink's bird. I don't recall ever "chastising" you for breeding to the mulberry faced bird, I don't even have Birchen, black OR blue, and I am in no position to be chastising anyone - I'm just a backyard breeder, trying to do right by my birds. So....

Also, just because one likes the look of a bird doens't mean a thing as it pertains to the SOP. I wasn't inferring the bird was good or bad per the SOP, I simply said she was pretty.

Wynette, No it was not you that said the Mulberry face was not good. I was Bev that said they should not have the mulberry face. I believe it will be up to the breeders of the Birchen to have a voice in the end. The only way the breeders of these new color will have a voice is if they speak up before the Sop is finalized.

True - I was aware the draft standard was written, but since it's not one of my varieties I honestly haven't been following whether it's been submitted or not. I don't recall - did an e-mail go out to members asking for input? If so, I missed it or just didn't reply since it's not one I'm all that interested in. I shouldn't really say "not interested" - it's a GORGEOUS variety, I just haven't the time personally to work with more than a couple. If it hasn't been approved yet, I would think it's still up for discussion (?)

What most are not aware of anyone can have a voice in the drawing up of a proposed standard for any variety or breed. All that is required is make a list of things you have a concern about and send them to the Standards Committee.
