Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

What most are not aware of anyone can have a voice in the drawing up of a proposed standard for any variety or breed. All that is required is make a list of things you have a concern about and send them to the Standards Committee.
I was certainly not aware of that! Interesting! So, you would just need to know when it was sent in & to have a copy of the draft?

The white is not SOP but it is pretty common among the Cottage Hill line. They might not be great for show but don't give up on them- those white specks might lead to some very dark eggs. It's a theory I've been toying with and I would love to know if it plays out in other flocks. (Not that I've been breeding for flecks, more of an observation).
Thanks Zonoma for your response. I did see the parent stock (up close and personal) and none of them had any visable white on them. I know the eggs they came from were a good 6... I won't know about their laying for a few more months from now I'm guessing...ok hoping! With them being so young I'm really hoping it molts out! Knowing my luck it will get worse! Only time will tell. I have 15 coming the end of next week from another with Cottage Hill lineage. I'll be interested to see them grow out. Really hoping for more males! I only have the 1 since the other 2 were killed. I'm just getting started but really hoping to help with the breed.

Thanks again for your input, it's much appreciated.

Well, my CH partner and I aren't too far away if you discover you need another male eventually. ;)

Thank you. Since the discussion; wondering if you would mind giving any feedback on the pics I posted of them a few days back?
I haven't seen any opinions nor praises so wondering. I am ok with getting Honest feedback, it won't hurt my feelings. I would just like to know if I'm thinking in the right direction on type and color. I understand pics are difficult to judge but I love the conversations around the SOP, seeing pics and the folks that have the "eye" providing their opinions. Again, many thanks.

I'm the exact wrong feedback for Marans type. The SOP is complicated and I don't fully understand it. I breed for dark eggs and healthy, personable birds without losing the copper and feathered feet. I'll work on type after I've recovered egg color. If I knew enough, I'd be all over it for you. ;)

Awe, well thanks, I appreciate that. Good luck with yours, I'll post pics once they start laying!

If you read articles out there they state that the brown egg color is controlled by at least 13 genes so it's a difficult question to answer definitively. I have also read on Bev Davis website that the male Marans has more influence on the dark egg color than the hen? If I did the cross you describe I would expect a lighter brown color egg in the offspring than the mom's egg. I do know that the white color is recessive. I hope this helps...

ahh, things are always more complicated that first thought.

THanks for the help. I have decided to wait until I get another Marans rooster. Then I shall see what we get.
