Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Would someone explain what these terms are referring to ????" Medium Station " vs " Low and High Station " ???
Correct me if I am wrong, I believe a "low station" is like a Dorking. A "medium Station" is like a Rhode Island Red and a "high station" is like a Langshan.
APA defines "Station" as, "A term applied to the ideal pose and symmetrical appearance, including height and reach in Modern Games.".

ok...your thoughts. So we have a certain roo in first pic...what do you think of the BCM with the white around face and neck... has a small dark comb at three weeks, whereas the brother is all out! the roo has tons of copper leakage...she has just a few feathers here and there.

Any thoughts... I am guessing the bottom one is definetly roo with the comb pinking up and the copper on chest and back. What about the one with white? Has small dark comb at same age of 3 weeks. Little copper mixed in here and there but not significatn... hoping for pullet? Your thoughts please?

the top one looks like a mossy pullet the bottom one IDK.... pullets can do that too, leaning to pullet but she will not be a pretty pullet with all the leakage on the breast. I can't tell gender on the bottom one light could be changing the way the comb looks.

Interesting that you bring this up. The thing I think is my major weakness is that I may have come to prefer the look of a Marans bird that may not necessarily be built to the Standard. It is what I am used to and what I have come to like, right or more probably, wrong. Wynette gets on me about it constantly but it's what I'm used to. I suppose this is the major reason why folks should NOT pass their culls on to someone new - and thus train more eyes to the wrong stuff.
Barb, You may like a Marans that will work just fine for what you have in mind doing with them. We should keep in mind that the SOP picture is just an Artist rendition of what they think it should look like. We can use any number of variables when breeding any of the different breeds. In years past when I would take up to 100 birds to a show I would show I would show several in a class so I would most likely have what a Judge was looking for. I have always bred my poultry to look like I want them to look. The SOP is a guideline only. Lot of birds win at the shows that are not to the SOP.

Ray, the term Station would also have something to do with the length of Shanks. We had a person on BYC that bred for the lower station Marans. I see nothing wrong with this as I myself like the higher station Marans. We have to use some of our likes and dislikes or what is the use just doing what someone else says is the correct way to do anything. As long as we get to where we want to be with them use whatever method you would like.

Just to bring something to the table. If anyone buys eggs from a few breeders and mixes all these up it will take a few year to work all the faults out while setting them as your strain if you are linebreeding them. If this is the plan of anyone bring in the different eggs and shut the door and work with what hatches from the group. No brother-sister mating just linebreeding. The third year you will have some kind of uniformity with the flock. Just keep records and cull real hard.
