Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Breeding to the SOP.

The SOP for the Marans breed is a mythical point to breed for in the marans. There is no one way to breed to the SOP. On the way to breeding the best Marans possible we have to make deviations along the way to accomplish our goal. It is not where we start but where we finish. The SOP says the Marans should be Medium Station, this in no way mean we can not use low station or high station marans in our breeding pens. I myself like the higher station Marans and will always include some in my breeding program going forward.

You can show a Marans in six different shows against the same Marans and have six different Judges and they will very likely pick different Marans first. Anytime you inject people into the equation you will have differring opinions. This is where you must decide for yourself what you want your Marans to look like.

This is for the New Marans people. If it helps one person it will be worth the effort.

Just breed the very best you have available and be prepared to cull real hard. Please do not pass the culls on to someone that is new.

Well said Don! Thank you!

Anyone have any chicks hatching this weekend? I will be getting the incubator going again and hopefully get the eggs in by the beginning of next week, just waiting on the packages to arrive and to collect some more eggs out of my girls before then. Will shoot to get a few update shots of chicks today, that is if they will stay still long enough. They are still pretty quiet, but zip around so dang fast!

Nope, not me, but I am having fun playing with these new babies. :D

Not Marans but I did hatch them out with Marans. ;)

Here's a few update shots on some of the chicks from last week's hatch.
Of course they had to leave a present on my art desk

blue copper boys

some black coppers

gil - the chicks are super cute, of course - I have a question on the blue copper chicks. I don't raise this variety, so I'm just wondering. Do you see any corelation in the color of the breast as chicks? I note one has yellow breast and looks darker blue, the other has a white breast and looks to be lighter blue. Does the breast color mean anything as chicks in this variety?

Pink - okay, that is a CUTE CUTE pic! I have mentioned to Rob that BYC ought to offer a waterfowl calendar as well as the regular BYC calendar with just land fowl - that pic cropped would be lovely in a calendar!

No, I haven't noticed that they color in any differently between the yellow fuzz and the lighter coloring. These are out of different pullets, so could just be from differences in what they produce. I do have a question, or would like an opinion I guess. I was wondering what you see, cockerel or pullet for the large splash on the left in the first photo? This is a question anyone is welcome to answer.
