Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yes the hens are from the same source....

so i'm open to swapping a really nice birchen marans pullet for a nice BTB roo if anyone has one..  I just don't want to start over with a chick again..

on the bright side  i might be a good idea to get a roo from a different line since i am starting at the ground floor so to speak..
I have 6 black copper marans roos and 4 blue copper roos and one extra splash marans

Bev Davis might have an extra BTB cockeral. Whatever you get, just make sure that they hatched out golden and not wildtype.

I agree, it is good to take these steps at the beginning.

So, just was getting the chicks all sorted food and water wise before I head off to work, and at 12 days old.....I have a crower. Plain as day, that's exactly what the turd is doing. I sure hope this weather turns quick so I can get them in grow out pens outdoors.

Thanks very much for the advice and support, without this great group on here I would be totally lost. I will check with Bev Davis because she is only about 100 miles or so from me but actually my roo may have originated from her, because i got them from a breeder in Loxahatchee and i believe he got birds from her..

Poor Harold :(.... and he was such a nice boy..

oh wow... that is so early!!! maybe it's a sign he will be a good roo when he grows up :)...

I am very new to chickens--my oldest are only 5 weeks old. I have some French Black Copper Marans chicks ordered to come this summer. I'm interested in breeding one or two breeds. I have a background in breeding show dogs and racehorses, so breeding is sort of part of my identity. That said, I know absolutely nothing about breeding or showing chickens. I intend to exhibit chickens as well. Where do I start to learn what a good Maran type is? When do I start looking at these chicks to judge their quality? Thanks. Janet
