......
Well, this is interesting---pure Ripley~~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...ng-pics-of-your-eggs-chicks-and-chickens/4020 If you approach this person be able to discuss the US Marans history and the role Ripley and his birds played in it. Have a written 5 generation breeding plan and be able to articulate why and what you are going to do. That you plan to never cross these bids with any other strain/line/breed...and mean it. You will probably only get one chance at them. BTW, I am a huge fan of Kermit's knowledge. So much of it is written down on the defunct namb list at yahoo. How I wish it could be brought over here.
Here are two classic plans. Look up "rotational line breeding" and use it for as many generations as you want. Bob Blosl was the late beloved founder of the BYC Heritage Large Fowl thread. A great teacher who loved to teach folk to breed better fowl. Here he is explaining it: http://bloslspoutlryfarm.tripod.com/id60.htmlHow do you make a 5 generation breeding plan? and how do you even figure out how to start? Is generation 1 the birds you start with and then generation 2 the offspring of those birds? And then how do you decide who you breed with who?
3riverschick thanks for this trip into yesterday ...... fun memories !!!Locations of various Marans strains in North America. Contact each person for availability.
Some may no longer have the breed but a good place to start research.
Many of these notes were posted years ago, but they contain clues, contact info and breed information.
Best Success,
Karen in western PA, USA

I am getting a lot of golden cuckoos. The trait seems to have began as one golden feather on the hackle of the rooster we chose to breed with 4 years ago.Is this a negitive sign of in- breeding or is this sport (golden) just a happy accident.Aprox 40% of the hatch is golden. Thank you for any input

Of everything I have see, I like the Shine On Farms eggs the best. Didn't spend a lot of looking at the birds, tho. always ask for egg shell samples when considering Marans.

Also look up the plan in Wid Cards' book online at this URL: https://archive.org/details/cu31924003158312
It's another classic breeding plan that can run for more than 5 generations. Wid Card was an elite veteran poultryman ( creator of the White-Laced Red Cornish) one of whose greatest gifts to the poultry world was his ability to make complicated breeding simple to the layperson. He used to go from show to show and sit with folks, explaining the ins and out of successful poultry breeding.
Done correctly and with judicious selection, arguably, neither plan requires outcross blood.
Best Success,
Karen.
Is anyone willing to sell hatching eggs still? Please pm me if so...thank you.
