Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

,
When we bred dogs, we shipped chilled semen via FedEx in Styrofoam containers. They have climate controlled holds in their planes. Have you thought of labeling the eggs "live embryos" or" chilled semen" and shipping FEXEx that way? It costs more but you can even get same day delivery. I guess it just turns on how valuable the eggs are to the buyer. I once shipped Marans eggs to TX as "fine crystal" "do not drop". The chilled semen Styrofoam kits can be bought online at Camelot Farms website and other places. If you have a friend in dog circles you can ask if they know anyone with an extra used kit laying around and buy at a discount.

I have never hatched eggs, and will be the first to admit I'm pretty ignorant about it, but it was my understanding that chilling the eggs would kill them?

There have been problems with USPS' priority which is why many breeders are now considering using express only. Chilling eggs is not recommended, so you got that right carnivore!
I double box and use newspaper to pad in between the boxes.

FedEx will NOT ship eggs. Only the Post Office will ship eggs and Live Birds. If they had competition they might do a better job.......

I can tell you with 100% certainty that FedEx ships live animals. Every day. Since my husband is a courier and has delivered many himself...

I can tell you certainty they don't do birds. They DO handle express birds some for the post office. I know they go through the FedEx hub in Memphis most of the time.

No I didn't mean chilling them. I meant using the Styrofoam container with the
chilled semen/live embryo label and shipping the wrapped eggs inside. No one is
going to open it and they are semen after all. Or "live embryos" as the case may be.
Point is, they will get the same handling as equine or canine "live embryos".
And access to true "overnight" delivery.
Best,
Karen
