Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Since this is Maran's thread I have a question for those of you experienced with Maran's.  Do you y'all feel they are a basically friendly bird? I know any bird can have a bad day and some breeds are not the best to have around young kids. Should be getting a pair of Blue Coppers next weekend :)

Thanks & Blessings
Tonya

My Golden Marans, including my rooster, are the only chicken area I allow my grandkids to collect eggs. My grandkids range in age from 2 to 11 and my roo is a gentle giant. The kids know they aren't allowed to open the gates into the Ameraucana. EE, or Orpington areas nor do they want to.

Hi all! I'm joining this thread because I'm expecting a one day old White Maran Chick from Meyer next Tuesday...

Congratulations! I have Marans from a local breeder, but I got other birds from Meyers. We ordered a variety of pullets from Meyers, and not a single roo. Not only do they have great customer service, but they have quality backyard chickens. I will definitely order from them again.

Back when I was buying from hatcheries instead of breeders (not so long ago), I got more than my share of cockerels when I paid for pullets from Meyer. Just "lucky" I guess...

Good luck. From looking at their photos of black copper and blue copper Marans, I wouldn't expect much in the way of quality.
Well, I'm such a Noob to chickens that I thought their Blue Copper Marans pic was gorgeous! LOL - I don't need perfection, as I'm not looking to breed or show, but I'd sure like a healthy chick who is sweet. I wish I had a high quality breeder around here, as I'd rather support that kind of operation, but all I can find around here are RIRs & Barred Rocks. So I had to go out on a limb to try some of the other awesome breeds out there.

I think you will be fine with the Meyers Marans. I have heard that the hatchery Marans' eggs are not as dark as the ones from a breeder, but it will still be darker than a normal brown egg. Best of luck with your chicken order!

Sadly, the White Marans chick arrived dead. The 2 Orpingtons & Brahma chick she was shipped with are doing well. I don't know what happened

. I'm just so glad the kids weren't home when I opened the box.
