Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I think there is Silver Cuckoo and Cuckoo they are different. I have Lavender Copper Marans. There are also just Blue marans too.

Yes, Silver Cuckoo and Cuckoo are different. The Silver Cuckoo is Cuckoo with the Birchen gene added.

I have Self Blue and Blue Copper in my list.

I can add Lavender Copper Marans to the list as an unestablished experimental. Any other experimentals you know of?

This is going to be a BIG project. I'm going to need pics of all the varieties that I don't have, and I don't want to start stealing pics off the internet. So if anyone has good pics of adult males and hens, and pics of chicks, of the various varieties, I would greatly appreciate them. I will be more than happy to credit each pic to the photographer.

Blue copper was on your list but not blue. You had black but not blue. I think most of the lavender marinas you see have copper in them and I am just going with the copper since I like the way lavender dilutes red too.

Quote: I have not read old chicken books so I don't know what they used to call stuff but Self-blue is LAVENDER. I know that is correct because there is some debate with the APA about admitting any breed variety with the word LAVENDER in the name. They want to call it Self Blue. You can look up self blue on BYC and see for yourself. Maybe someone else will come along with genetic vernacular to help you more.

That is my understanding as well. There is a difference between blue and self blue and other breeds, besides Marans will list colors: Blue; Self Blue; etc.
