Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have 5 girls, two Roosters, and 20 more that are maturing outside. I have seen the Dominant and Subordinate rooster relationship. However, Chauncy takes it to a whole other level with Jaque. Chauncy is a huge specimen and rules the roost. Chauncy finds the nesting box a safety zone, and prefers to come and eat and drink after Chauncy and the girls have their fill. I am hoping this relationship will even out once the 20 girls I have out there mature sexually. 25 girls should be enough for two roosters to fertilize amicably. However, I have noted that with the BCM they can be aggressive. Five of my roosters have become dinner because of that. If a rooster is aggressive to humans, they are taken out the gene pool and put into the crock pot.

BCM's lighten and darken throughout their laying cycle. However, some will lay darker than others. There is actually a chart as to the deepness of Maran eggs.

I guess I'm kinda old and a lot 'old school'. I understand culling/killing a hateful cock if one has small children or elderly folks to worry about but there is no way I would 'cull' an otherwise excellent cock bird just because he thinks he can take me. When I get so that one CAN get the best of me, then all chickens will be gone.

Couldn't take the shame of a broody puttin' me on a quick shuffle.

Hellbender, I just don't put up with that carp. I can knock a mean one down to size but its in the pot the next chance I get. I have no use for a mean bird in my breeding pen, quality or not.

i know their eggs lighten and darken and actually i have the maran breeders club of g b egg
chart 4 is ok most good ones are 5 to 7 8 or 9 very rare but any way i was only saying how
nice the eggs and flock looks so i ask you whats your point you added nothing to the post

Please, let's not be snarky...that's how good threads are shut down.

I am a small suburban mixed flock keeper. I sell eggs to my friends and coworkers and like a colorful carton. Hence I keep a few Maran hens. I have 2 Bcms, and 2 older blue coppers. Yesterday I was able to purchase a 10 month old Bcm and a " brown maran" of the same age. The gentleman I got them from said he got them from Meyer hatchery last spring. Of course I do not think there is any such bird as a brown maran, so I am politely asking what I might have. She is really beautiful. Mostly reminds me of a partridge rock plumage, but she has a lot of gold/bronze feathers at her neck and the most feathers I have ever seen on her legs and feet. No eggs from either one yet to tell you egg color.

I looked on the Meyer website and they have a few varieties of maran, bUT none like you describe... however, they do carry a Partridge cochin line that has gobs of feathers on their feet.
