Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Berkleysprings- BEAUTIFUL hens!!!!

Cortunix--nice young girls! Do they all have pumpkin colored eyes? It might just be the pic or my monitor, but one of them looks like it has green eyes.

Pink- congrats on the egg. That's quite a display you built there!

Hi Zanna!
Yes you can breed the roo to the feather legged hens and some of the babies will get feathered shanks, if feathered shanks is what you would like to breed for, grow out a feather shanked rooster and use him over your feather shanked girls. Copper color around the neck is a good thing and yes you can breed for it, you can even use your girls that do not have any color around their necks, not every bird produced from the cross will show color but depending on the amount of copper your rooster has you may be happily surprised.

mine never were.... Black Coppers have the darkest eggs, with the wheaton close behind and blue...Blue Birchen didn't have the desired color so I culled my entire flock a couple years ago.

Good morning all

Well, as I expected, the neighbor never showed up. I've never been one to ask for help, but this is getting ridiculous here. Woke up at 4:30 this morning cause my nose was cold. The little oil filled radiator I have, turned itself off in the night

Was a whopping 49* in the house, although I guess I should be glad it wasn't 17* like it is outside! The only ones warm in the house this morning are my eggies in the bator! I love this incubator!! It holds temps and humidity soooo well, despite the ambient temps in the house...thank God! Had I had them in the LG, the temp would've dropped to 60 something I'm quite sure!

Morning Deb!

I wish I lived closer to you now, DH and I would have you fixed up in a jiffy! Hope you get someone to help you out, a girl can't be cold.
Glad you are happy with your 'bator too. What day is it? 4-5?

Today is day 20 for me, yesterday I saw a little bit of rocking going on.

Mornin' Pink!

Aww, thanks for the neighborly thing! It used to be that way out here, but seems these days, all are out for their own. I may go down and snag one of the Amish guys if my builders can't get here to do it.

Yes, day 5 here in batorland! Glad yours are rocking, won't be long now!!

, I was like hurry up and get out the way, so I can grab it out of the nest box silly girl , but she had to stand there for a couple minutes you know. I could see it there but couldn't really see what color it was until I had it in my hand. Here's hoping that it darkens up which I suspect it will. It better get better than that. If I hadn't seen her lay it I would have swore it was a Welsummer egg. I love the fact that she decided to start laying early. 1 down 7 more to go.
Come on girls Mamma needs more eggs!

Ivy~ That oyster or clam shell (I don't which) has been sitting on my front porch filled with my DD's little rock collection for years, no need to build a display....just swish off the dust. Works great!
