Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Some people only raise clean legged marans. Many prefer them that way. You could always get you a feather legged roo to breed them to and start some feather legged chicks if that what you want. The feather legged gene is dominant, so it shouldn't be too hard to incorporate.

I have some 3 1/2 month old FBCM bought from a breeder as day olds (not a hatchery). I think I am ending up with 6 hens and 1 roo. The roo has no feathering on his legs, 4 of the hens do and one does not. Also the roo and some of the hens have lovely gold colouring around their necks and, some do not. I am just a hobbyist, but I believe in breeding quality if I am going to bother to breed even though they will stay with me or friends who are also just hobbyists. Will the roo crossed with the feather legged hens produce feather legged offspring? Can you breed for the gold colouring around the neck (I think it is desireable?!) by only crossing a roo that has it with hens that have it or is it a crap shoot? Any information appreciated!

That's good to know, I am new to the breed, been learning alot from this thread though. I think they are beautiful birds, I love the deep copper coloring they have around the neck, and they stand out so well in the snow. They have had quite a hard time as my comets have been brutal w them. Things have quieted down though since they are now larger than the comets.

I sure hope so. . . . . I just hope that now she doesn't do it all time because she got a taste for it!

I'll be watching her - - - for sure

First egg from a Greenfire Farms pullet. She's not even 5 mos. old yet and it was the girl I suspected, watched her lay it. Also, 2 more of the GFF girls were in 2 other nest boxes.

Well...here it is.
