Kathy, ship the little clean legged chickie to me if you don't want to work with featherless legs, I want to start making some Olive Eggers that have clean shanks. That's one reason why I hope to use a Penedesenca hen to make some OE, too.

(ETA: Seriously.

Jan~ So happy to hear about Virgil!!!! That is the best! Merry Christmas!

Debbi~ Congrats on the little blue fuzzy, C'mon little chickies!

I've not noticed that about the more relaxed thing, I'll have to pay more attention next hatch. Oh, remember the first chick from my last hatch that was spoiled rotten that first night....she was a screamer for about a day until the next one came along then they were pretty quiet. I knew that first night created a monster, she walks up my arm, eats out of my hand. She is a sweety....start 'em young I guess. Oh...BTW all three of them are girls.

Kathy~ YES! What CP and Village said about the feather legged thing. I have one boy that has clean legs that I breed on purpose, he's just too good of a boy not too, so I fight the clean legged thing, but the quest for feathered shanks in his offspring is getting better.

Harris5~ Congratulations on your birdie purchases! Can't wait to see them!

Good morning everyone! Happy times in my house hold. 11 BCM's have hatched so far. 10 are in the brooder (fish tank) and are such a joy to watch. We had my kids counsins (6 & 3)over yesterday to see the chicks and they were so thrilled. They are not really city kids, but have not had "hands-on" experience with chicks or seen them hatching. They were so excited.

Question- Sorry, to ask on this thread, but you all have sooo much experience-I have 3 chicks who have stalled zipping. They are still active, but not getting anywhere since 2 PM yesterday. I did open the bator yesterday to get the 10 rowdys out, but did it in a steaming bathroom and only lost a few % of humidity AND a chick has hatched since then. Is it time to intervene. Did Bev (or someone) say to put a warm washcloth over the egg?

Please help.
Overall, these chicks are different from the other breeds I have hatched. Interesting.
Jeremy-nice pix. You have inspired me.
Debbi-eggcited for you-good vibes for a good % hatch

as soon as I finish coffee & feed the kids I will take pictures.

bike~ I have seen little ones pip and then take 2 days to hatch, some I would have thought for sure were not going to do anything, they would pip then I wouldn't see any movement for a day or more.....then BAMMMM here's a little fuzzy staring back at you from with in the 'bator.

They have to be pretty far along in the zip process for me to get in there and help them out if I see a struggler, but I am also not one to help that many out. For me, they have to be able to get here themselves, but this is just me.

It can take 24 hrs for them to finish so unless the membrane turns yellowish looking I leave them alone. I'm hatching some now that are early.....I was 12 hrs late to lock them down which shouldn't be a biggie and I had 2 out with the turner still on humidity at 35% and the other 5 pipped....laying on my turkey eggs this morning I have another one out and I'm not changing anything. So Geebs these are my first babies since changing to UltraKibble and the eggshell inside is clean. The first 2 chicks hatched are my Indian Rivers (delaware roo x new hampshire hen) and a cuckoo looking at me this morning...so much for a Christmas hatch so I guess I don't need to bump the humidity up so much it was @35%.....

Losta~ Merry Happy Early Christmas Chicks to you!

Go Chickies!

Mornin' all ~

Still waiting on the one from yesterdays pip. She's zipped about 1/4 of the way, still peeping and moving, so guess I'll give her a bit longer to get out. One other is still rocking, nothing from the rest. Maybe they are waiting for Christmas?? Poor little Blue Butt is all by herself in the LG next to the bator. She's a quiet baby, guess I shouldn't complain. Cute little bugger!

Fell asleep at the puter last night

. Woke up at 3am, went out and loaded the wood furnace, checked on the bator, and went to bed. Woke up to snow this morning!! Headed out to the coop, opened the pop door, and instead of an explosion of chooks, one pullet stuck her head out, looked around and said, "oh no, not THIS stuff again!", turned around and went back inside. A couple of the youngins got run outside, and they aren't quite sure what to do now

Jeremy...if you're looking for clean-legged Marans, then you should add those Golden Cuckoos to your gang! Then we can trade eggs!

I have a Marans girl who had only been laying for a few weeks and decided to go broodie. I caved and gave her 11 eggs. I candled the other day and 9 of them are developing. They should be due just after Christmas. Now what on earth should I do for her??? Separate her from the others? Will it be too cold for the chicks once they hatch? It's cold out! HELP!?!?!?!?
