Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

They are all hatchmates and grew up together even though they are from separate sources. They were just acting stupid. Today they aren't bothering the Wheaten Marans roo that they were picking on first. I tried putting the BCM roo back in and they all attacked him so had to take him out again.


Debbi here are the Key West pics you wanted to see. Its a little sunnier today so went out this morning and got them. One is of the inside of thier coop and you can see the little egg in the right nestbox.

They are beautiful! I was expecting to see a red jungle fowl looking bird.....this is a very nice surprise! He's fabulous! Is that considered a gold or silver duckwing type? Lovely girls too! The last one with the lacing on the breast is my fav...sorry I don't like to play fav's but she sure is PRETTY!

They are close in color to my BCs I hatched maybe more of a mat or satin finish my BCs have redder shinier ones

I kept one Hatchery Roo he is a good roo a true gentleman and huge...I have 3 young boys growing up one with feathered legs and I've hatched one who has feathered legs but he's a baby but came from a dark egg so I' growing him up too. I like the pattern as they can be sexed at hatch and they blend in with the surroundings well. I've had better luck with my Cuckoos that is hatching out nice ones than my BCs though I seem to have had a little more luck with my hatches lately just waiting for them to grow out I might have a pair or trio worth keeping. There are a few of us on the board who have them.

I need to take some more pictures it's just too wet right now

I have a question it may be totally stupid to BCM feather out at the same rate for both sexes I have on i hatched that is a total doll. just hoping its not a roo

I'll be going up Headquarters Rd. then out Weyerhauser 1750 ( I think that's the number) down your side of Rose Valley into the upper Coweeman country, then down the pavement to your house. I'll keep track of how many paved miles I travel...everyone knows that logging roads don't count!

Gee. I feel so lonesome. I wish I had some marans people nearby.

Anyway, it is a GORGEOUS day. It's nice to have some sunshine and a day when the winds aren't blowing 30-40mph.

I put some ham and beans on the stove for later, and decided that this nice day is the day my hens were going to learn what that pop up door was for. I couldn't chase them out. Hubby had to help me catch them one by one and physically throw them out. They were trying to come back in as I was putting them out, so I shut the door behind them. ONCE OUTSIDE it didn't take them long to realize, "HEY! This is all right!" Larger pen, dirt to scratch in, and LOOK! It's the roo boys across the fence. Cracked corn scattered, a pile of fresh hay, fresh water, but the best thing..... DIRT! Oh, my, did we have a dirt bath party.

In the meantime, the roos were doing their little side-ways dance at the fence saying, "Look at me! Look at me.... oh, my... look at HER!"

Obviously I had a good time watching the shenanigans.

It was so nice out, hubby and I decided to stay out and split some wood. After splitting for half an hour, I remembered...........the BEANS!

Came in and yes, they had boiled dry and were just starting to burn. Dumped them in a bucked and started over. When the burnt beans cooled I took them out to the ladies. They all strolled over to look in the pan, but wouldn't touch them. Too scary. Not quite as scary as a pop up door. What a bunch of chickens.

So my question is this. If my hens eat beans, will I get flatulance from eating their eggs?

Ivywoods... you probably won't be affected but your birds might not be laying eggs in the traditional sense. They might develop a "power - lay".
