Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Donna, yes, bought the material for the trap nests yesterday. I built one two times already so didn't like and put them in the burn pile. It will take a little time as I want to take it apart and make knocked down pictures with measurements.

I would really like to see what you have there. Walt put up a picture of a pigeon trap nest thing.... that might have to be the way I go.... easy to add to what I have already.

haha, too funny. I hope to get to it this week, but to be honest I have no idea when I work except for to show up tomorrow more for truck. Things are all upside down at work as far as no regular schedule. Too many people sick and out of town to know what to expect. I'm going to be working on photos as I usually make a line up of what I want to breed to who and make notes on what I expect and what is needed and etc. It helps to track progress, so I'll post those when I get going. I still need to get a good light booth area set up so the photos are more consistent.

Donna, I want a egg roll out tray so the eggs are clean and the hen can not eat the eggs. I think I can build the trap nest I am building for less than the pigeon front cost . Hold of a few days and it will be worth your time. Will work in my shop later this evening.

I don't have any plans to build anything, except the newly painted with crown molding pantry cabinet that fell over on my new Marans roo's pen and BROKE the top door

I hate painting and now I have to do it AGAIN! after the repair. It really only broke the wood in the center and little on the frame so we were able to take that piece out and can replace it and glue the frame back together....not too bad, but it is just MORE TIME I DON'T HAVE

Hey Slick!
Hope you are doing great!
I like your pen made out of the PVC...I have tons of it sitting around here that I use in my gardens. I think I may use some of the extras to make a run like you have for my youngins.

Great Job!

Hi, Pink, doing great here. Got the new boy in with my four girls and he's working, but they ain't laying. I have one egg so far that will go in with the Lavender hatch. Thanks on the pens as they seems to be working out very well.

I fell in love with the eggs first. Then the blues.... then I met my little washingtons (aka pinks chicks lol) and love the pullets to pieces. Great personalities. I have a variety of colored eggs in my cartons and the marans just add so much enjoyment to cooking. Plus they have feathered legs and are much chunkier then my other birds. I do it for the variety.... hope that we can start breeding them someday.

It's probably the cook in me coming out, but after reading how the French held the eggs in such high esteem, it was the eggs that attracted me at first. When I got to looking into the bird I wanted to build the best bird I could, but soon discovered that I just wasn't dedicated enough after obtaining males with DQ's. Just can't see trying to build a good bird with bad genes. So, I'm back to the egg thing with them and am going to strive to produce a dark laying line with the females I already have.
