Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thank goodness! I was really excited to hear that he did not come from me after all.

Now knowing where he came from........ FOR SURE test mate him and do not feel bad about moving on if he doesn't give you what you are looking for. I would expect some off colored chicks to come from this male and his fathers lineage. Cull and cull hard. I have personal experience with the paternal lineage of these birds as I have had birds from the same source that your males father comes from.

Have fun watching those juveniles you have growing out from Cottage Hill. I hope you have a good roo waiting for you in that bunch. :)

well, made it through the mass culling and its looking at the current moment I have 46 Marans left. I know that a few more will still go, but the bulk has been done.

I have 21 Coppers - 4 BCM males, 9 BCM females, 1 Blue male, 4 blue pullets, 1 splash male and 2 splash females.

In the Birchens - I have 20. This includes the three girls that I suspect are solids - 2 blues and 1 splash
3 black males, 6 black pullets, 3 blue pullets, and 5 splash females.

I also have the 5 silver marans, making 46.

Out of these, I think possibly 3 to 5 more will go, just giving it a couple of days til I feel better and will look at them with a fresh set of eyes.

Hello all

I am new to the chicken world; I do love them and find them awesome birds, especially for painting.

see paintings here: http://marickdarko.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d5cwhwn and http://marickdarko.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d4lfyza

I do like the little bantam a great deal. They’re just so small and fun! I would like to keep some kind of breed standard with the random ones that we picked up at a trader fair but I don't know a think about chickens other than there pretty. Let me know what you can tell me. I’m not looking to become a major show person, did that with horses and I’m done with it, but I would like to dabble in it. Is it possible to take un-pedigreed roosters to open class at fair? I do have a few photos of 2 of our babie men Tac and Tic, what do you think of them? What kinds of photos do I need to take for people to get a good idea of them?

Sorry Im so new and you can tell me to shut up and sit in a corner if you want J

Hi, welcome to the world of chickens!

This thread is specifically for discussion about Marans chickens; most are large fowl, but there are a few folks working on bantam varieties. I'm not quite sure I understand your question about taking birds to fair - it sounds like you have a few barnyard birds that may not be purebred? Could you please explain?

Hey Don,

Got a quick shot of one of my youngsters. This is that copper you liked before when he was only about 3 1/2 months old. I believe he's not quite 6 months now. He still has a ton of filling out to do, but is already good at hopping fences and picking fights with the larger males as you can see in his comb and waddles. I think his chest will fill in nicely and drop to balance himself out more. Excuse the tail as he had the wind behind him blowing the feathers up. He's also perched on one leg, otherwise it would be easier to see more of his width. The eye color is nice and light. I think he will work well as a breeder, particularly to put color in the collars of the ladies.

I am 300 posts behind, sorry if this is old news...

Vicki, that blue boy is amazing! What a beef cake.

Pink, love the black.

I've got BC Marans eggs coming for the NYD Hatch. I've also been looking for some White or Cuckoo to put in with my lone white pullet. I may be crazy starting another color and have to have yet ANOTHER coop, especially as I haven't seen any eggs out of this puller and am wondering if it would be worth it to start another project.

Thanks, I'm working on them. This next spring I plan to mainly focus on the blues in the coppers and the birchens. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Posting about the BC female with no copper. I see some lately suggesting to cull the dark females and not breed. I have found in my breeding of BC that the dark females will produce some really well colored Bc if bred to something we know is from of BC that has good coloring. 1 1/2 year ago my last big hatching days for BC I use all dark BC female because they were the only ones with the type I wanted to breed forward. Around 90% of pullets had plenty of Copper..

There is someone on BYC at present in the egg section advertising that they have 8 yards of BC from different people and their flock is supposed to be closed. Just wondering if any one has contact this farm for pictures or info.

I haven't. Do you have a link to their advertisement?
