Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

VICKI, Happy Birthday
Are you a Christmas Eve Baby? ?

Happy Birthday!

My hatch is coming to an end... I am real happy with this hatch. 12 out of the 13 buff leghorns and 4 out of 5 of the delawares hatched. The single BCM never pipped.
I was going to set more marans eggs but the girls have QUIT laying again... OMG... WTH... Am I never going to get to hatch more black butts ? ? ?

Yup....missed Christmas by less than an hour haha

Hopefully you will get more BCM eggies soon and have lots of Marans fuzzy butts running around!

Merry Christmas and Happy B'day Vicki! I want to give a sincere thanks to all of the wonderfull and helpfull people on this thread, Don, Vicki, Lisa, Pinkchick, DMRippy, Geebs, to name a few........... Here's to successful hatching in the New Years and some major improvements in all of our Marans (and Delawares, had to throw them in Lisa)!!!!! Keep having fun with your chickens despite the discouraging moments we all have!

Merry Christmas to everyone and happy belated birthday to Vicki!

My Christmas hatch started last evening and a first happened to one of my three Marans eggs. When the thing pipped blood started running down the egg. I watched it for a couple of hours and when there was no movement I opened it. The chick was dead and there was a fair amount of blood on the inside. Haven't seen this in my limited experience and I gotta figure there was nothing I could have done, but does anyone have an idea what might have happened?

It pipped on a vein..... not sure there is much you can do..... They start pipping while there is still blood in the membrane and as they work I think they absorb the remaining blood. By the time they are ready to start zipping the blood should be gone.... I think that is right. I have not researched it much. Just my observations.

Sorry.... I had one yesterday that zipped and died.... it is a shame they make it that far and died over something like that.....
