Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

As much as I'd loooove to read 4000+ pages, my internet connection is quite wonky. I'm pretty new to the whole chicken keeping thing. It started out with RIRs and Production reds and then I heard about Marans. I just had to have them. I tracked down a few breeders and collected quite a few in different colors. I have whites, blue coppers, golden cuckoo and a few black coppers.

After obtaining my white ones, I wondered if I could create splash by breeding the blues to them. Is this a no-no? Or not how it works?

desertmarcy I've been reading some of your posts and I would totally love to come down south and pick your brain about the Marans. Will you be selling any of your Black Coppers?

Thank you NJ!
I doubt she will return. We were gone working all day yesterday and our oldest son left a few hours after we did and is just telling me that at about 130pm, before he left for town he heard quite a commotion coming from the geese. He said when he looked out he thought he saw a hawk again by the coop area. I have been having hawk visits on a regular basis, so I am going to assume that she was taken by the hawk.

Sorry to hear about your girl. Too bad a hawk isn't a critter you can shoot lol. I still haven't caught mine. Trapped some more possums but no coons or foxes. I have seen a few red tail hawks around here this week eyeballing my lavender silkie pen that I haven't gotten fully covered yet. I had to put up a tarp until I get it finished.

Cute babies!!! You can't make splash by breeding white x blue. You need blue x blue ,splash x blue or, of course, splash x splash to get splash.

Do you have any pics of a golden cuckoo marans? They sound pretty. Do they have feathered legs or are they clean legged?

Thanks

Wouldn't it be great to have a place for old horses to go to hang out together? It'd be like an old folks' home but for horses! HA! Love it!
It's called Tannis' house! I have sucker written all over me. Mine are 34, 27, 22 and the youngster is 16.

Of course, we have a busy day on here and I missed it all again. My husbands car wouldn't start, had to go rescue him and my car broke down right after I picked him up. It took a good 20 mins to get the tow truck driver to understand why we needed 2 cars towed that were 500 ft from each other, not at our house and not in an accident. We were 10 mins from the airport and they didn't have one single car available. My poor eggs were so cold by the time I got them collected today, I bet not a one of them hatches. BAD DAY! But it could always be worse

I will get some pics of my young roo tomorrow when its light out. They have feathered legs. Its not too old yet though but hes coming along nice. This was him when he was a day old. I lost one pullet but still have one.

Could someone please tell me how old a Marans rooster needs to be to breed? I have 4 roosters and 2 pullets that are 13 weeks old. I have at least one rooster that is crowing right now. We bought them as straight run chicks and we live in town, so I have to find homes for the roosters but my husband was hoping to breed one to our Americana before we got sold all of them. I am just curious if we will have enough time before the neighbors start noticing :) Thanks in advance!!
