Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

The time is finally here, starting to hear some faint little peeps every once and a while. If all stays on track, should start hatching out this evening thru the night and into tomorrow.
Yeah, good luck on your hatch

This hatch finished up AM of Day 22, all were pipped Eve of day 20. My previous 4 hatches pipped late day 21, finished up day 23, same parental pairings, same incubators, go figure! All really good hatches though, I think it is the dandelions/garden greens and sprouted oats I have been feeding the breeders :) Really, I feel very lucky, even when I was a complete beginner, the Marans hatched well for me and the beginners luck has not run out (yet)!
Awesome to hear about your hatch!

Hey Maran lovers... Can I get some help? I just got my babies in, and I split an order with a friend... we both got barrd plymoth rocks, but I got 3 silver cuckoo maran. I can't tell them apart! Please give me any identifying marks so she doesnt take my babies!

I notice some have a white tip to their beeks, while others beaks are darker.

Any advise is truely appreciated!
the cuckoo marans should have a white dot on top of their head

They are from the 2 BCM gals that I had here breeding for my BFF so she could have some new layers. She cares only about egg color. I hatched the Bettyz out on the NYD hatch along in 2012. They were suppose to be from the same stock as my beloved Bill but later I found out that they definitely were not. I didn't keep any of them, gave them all to my BFF. I had this pop up before out of another line of Marans I had when I first started. I culled them all. The lines the Bettyz come from carries BTB and Wheaten and who knows what else.

I will only be keeping the chicks that are correctly marked and studying them, they will be for layers only. The off colored chicks will be going back to my BFF for dark egg layers.

P.S. May I try some Leeks? :D
