Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I just can't go through over 45,000 posts. If it were all just related to the breed and breeding I would but there is so much side chatter--I just don't have that much time.

Are Marans a recognized breed by whatever organization handles poultry shows?

Are they supposed to have clean legs or feathered legs? My chicks are coming from the Wade Jeane line, so I believe they should have feathered legs.

At what age will they start to show whether or not they are a good type?

Where can I find a written standard on them?

Thanks for all your help. Janet

Much smaller thread you can weed through easier.

Well, eggs will go in the incubator tonight before I head to bed. Did manage to get 6 eggs from Luella who is mated to Big Boy, so I'm going to be very excited to see about these and what they produce. Any bets on wht kind of quality they will produce Don? heehee

Also, here's the shipped eggs I got, they will go in as well

In all, from the shipped eggs and those collected from my pens, I think about 145 eggs are going in. Now, just to convince myself to be patient til they hatch
I am impressed..... 21 days!

Indeed! Luckily I will have tons of stuff to keep me busy between now and then! There are some other matings that will make it into this batch beside these I'm also very excited about. I will have 43 birchen eggs in there too from two different pens. Not as nice in color, but I certainly am getting there. I still have to get those into hatching trays. I was disinfecting the trays and am waiting for them to dry now. I also have 4 eggs that are just humungous that I am going to attempt hatching!

Good luck the color looks nice! We are at day 14 with the test hatch- have kept the humidity under 35% so far- looks like the rooster's are the issue this year

Do you have a photo of the Silver Blue Rooster? Here is the breakdown of breeding outcomes when mating Blues, Blacks and Splashes. It is not a gene that breeds true, so you might want to keep a record of these on hand when deciding matings to help with getting the desired colors.
[COLOR=000000]Blue X Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black, 25% Splash

[COLOR=000000]Blue X Splash = 50% Blue, 50% Splash

[COLOR=000000]Blue X Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black

[COLOR=000000]Splash X Black = 100% Blue

[COLOR=000000]Black X Black = 100% Black

We were told that he was a blue when we bought him. But when my husband researched the Maran Club of America website he found out that he looked more like the Silver Blue Maran.

He looks like a Splash Copper Marans... could someone tell me what they are talking about on that page? Never heard of that color combo... do they mean Blue Copper and Blue Birchen? I am running on just a couple of hours of sleep so I can't read all that tonight. ER.... I need to read and retain some genetics info.

The link that I sent you was from the Marans Club of Am. Blue Varieties. The breeder, Ava, that we bought him from said that he went 2nd place blue at the Nationals in Newnan.

That is either a blue copper or splash copper, hard to tell, but not a silver blue. Silver Blues here in the states are birds that are blue in body, and have silver coloring as the accent on the neck and saddles, etc.
