Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Agree - cockerel. Are you sure it's a blue copper Marans? Doesn't look like it has any shank feathering, and eyes are awfully dark...any chance it's something else? No offense intended, it's a gorgeous male!

Thanks for the input, you have definitely confirmed my suspicion on gender. It doesnt look it in the photo, but the shanks are lightly feathered all the way down to the outer toe. I got eggs from a reputable breeder so pretty sure it is what its supposed to be. If I could have any rooster, a blue copper would be it, I think they are stunning. Unfortunately this little guy will have to go to a new home.

Looks like a pullet to me. A cockerel that old should have some copper already. The eyes look dark but still a little greenish, sort of like my solid blues. The darkness fades as they reach maturity most of the time.

Check down the center of its back and just above the hips for darker feathers shafting in. See if there is any copper showing in them.

I'm pretty sure that's a pullet. I have a 6 week-old BCM cockrel and his comb and wattles are much more pronounced.

Hi

This is my first time getting chickens and I just wanted to share some pictures of my Black Copper Marans. They are 6 weeks old so they are at the "ugly" phase but they are still so darn cute to me

Folks - I've been alerted by our MCCUSA Regional Director that there will be an egg show at the Canfield, Ohio poultry show. Here is information -

MCC USA EGG SHOW!!

The Ohio Buckeye Fancy Feather Poultry Club will be hosting an MCCUSA
Marans eggs show in Canfield, Ohio on June 8th 2013.

PM me for information on where to send your entry; entries must be received by June 6. YOU NEED NOT BE AN MCCUSA MEMBER to enter or win!!

One egg entry consists of 3 eggs. They must be clean and as fresh as possible. You may include an extra in case of breakage. You may enter as many eggs as you like. Eggs are destroyed after the final judging.

Please include your $5 entry fee per entry and an egg show entry form.

Forms can be downloaded from the Yahoo group site or PM me for a copy. If you include a self-addressed, stamped envelope, the director will mail you the judging form so you can see what your score is in each area judged.

This is a really good way to know where you are in terms of egg color, shape, and finish!

Let me know if you have any questions!!

hmm....I dunno....those wattles are pretty big for an 8 week old...I hope I'm wrong, though, since she wants it to be a pullet!
