Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Just need a bit of help.. i just hatched out 12 BCM chickens, the breeder said they are of good lines... my question is they are 9 days old is there anyway to sex them ? some of them have whte eye liner around their eyes?? I suggestions I would appreciate

Hi good maran folks, I have a question. I have 3 BCM pullets that are just over 15 weeks old. I found a beautiful egg today that I am sure is from one of them. I posted this on Facebook and am being told pretty much that I'm a liar or crazy bc marans don't lay that young. I was not expecting them too but found this egg.

Does this look like an egg that a barred rock, SLW, or production red would have layed?? They are the only other brown egg layers I have. Thanks!

Hello, I have just recently hatched 3 chicks from 6 eggs for the first time. I had received the incubator and the eggs from friends who wanted to get me started

...I have two wyandottes already, 9 & 11 months. I was not thinking of having Marans, until now

..haha, I guess that is how it works..huh?! Here are some pics of the 2 wk-3 day olds ... I am extremely new to this particular breed, so any and all knowledge/info/opinions are very welcome! We are holding on to them until we know who is what...I would like to keep at least one, if I am fortunate to have more pullets, then I will go from there. Thank you for letting me share, this is a very informative thread and I have enjoyed ready and learning from you all. Danielle

I've had "Golden Comets" that have laid pretty dark eggs at the beginning of their laying. Not to say that isn't from your marans, but if your other breeds are new pullets it could be from one of them.

I'm so glad i'm not the only one who dates their eggs... !!
If I don't my family mixes them all up in the refrig and i never know who is old and who isn't..
Yep, and that way if I suddenly get the urgent need to stick more eggs in the incubator I can use the freshest :lau I know you aren't supposed to refrigerate hatching eggs, but I figured out our fridge is actually the correct temp/humidity. I have 20 hatching this week that were all done that way.
