Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I was thinking about adding a couple splash marans pullets to my flock. How big do they get and are they a docile breed? I have 4 BO (maybe 3 if one turns out to be a roo) and some Black Stars (sex-links). Are they friendly or skittish?

My Marans mature a little bit larger than the average hatchery stock dual purpose breeds. They are very calm and laid back. Most are somewhat aloof, but some individuals are friendly.

Great. Thanks for that info. I went ahead and ordered 2 pullets. I can handle aloof. Are they pretty quite? I cannot stand how loud and skittish my BSL are.

I have cuckoo and BC marans. Two of the most laid back, but protective roosters I have ever had. High fertility in the eggs, too. I tell people all the time that if I could only keep one breed of chicken, it would be cuckoo marans

I agree marans are VERY laid back birds. I had some cottage hill wheaten marans, and they were some of the nicest birds I've raised. The roosters were never aggressive, but were ready to protect they're flock if need be. I hope to be able to get more of them some day.

X2 for both of you! My Marans roo is easy to handle when need be, very protective of the flock and alert yet knows people aren't the enemy. And fertility is always through the roof! I'm going to be sad to see him go. Since he carries the recessive wheaten gene, he and my hen (also carrier) are both being rehomed. My young roo who will be replacing him is already showing the same characteristics. He's only 6 weeks old and has been caring for the babies (2 weeks old now), calling them to food and showing them treats. I thought he was a she with strong motherly instincts but those little pink wattles showing up are proving me wrong. Mocha is already very adventurous and willing to be held too. Love this breed!
