I didn't know that, Don. I've never noticed it on my girls, but now I'm curious to check

I was pretty sure that's what you meant, but as many faults as I have in my birds I may as well check for that one, too

Thanks! Wasn't sure, lol. But if color isn't the only difference between "varieties", then wouldn't that make them a subspecies? Not an expert by far, just curious how species and whatnot work with chicken breeds. Thanks for the help. You guys are awesome!

I have a birchen maran x leghorn about 12 weeks old now. Only just getting tail feathers small wattles not really pink in the face yet. Possible girl? No sign at all of saddle featgers new neck feathers coming in are rounded.

Saddle feathers are the long skinny feathers a male has on his back, at the base of his tail.
