Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

They better get a mighty big task force if they plan on forcing everyone to be NPIP certified. And in my opinion, what's good for the goose is good for the gander...so even backroad farmers selling eating eggs should have to supply certificates, too. But anyway...I'll leave it at that my friends. That's an entirely new thread just waiting to be debated.

Shelley, the USDA has a form vs form 9-3 that is supposed to be sent with hatching eggs, chicks , Poults verifying that they are NPIP.

Well, the chooks sure are enjoying life outside! They went crazy inside the coop with all the shavings. Scratching, flipping them over themselves, dustbathing in them. They had shavings in their cage, but not like this! LOL. They look so small in there to me now. They looked so big inside. They won't come out of the coop, probably a good thing because it's so hot! I can honestly recommend the "coop building diet plan" to anyone wanting to lose weight! Gees, I've lost almost 3 pants sizes since I started!

Storms are rolling in, will try to get some of my pics on here. With all the nice looking birds I've seen lately, my four look so pitiful

But, they are mine, healthy, and now happy! C'mon girls, we need some eggs...in about 16 more weeks

Found a mistake I made almost right away with my bucket waterer. You don't see it in the pics as it was removed. The chooks found great delight in getting the nipples stuck in the flow position. I had drilled them into the side of the bucket, but I now believe they have to go on the bottom to keep the valve from leaning to one side and keeping it flowing. So, back to the drawing board, and lesson learned. They have two high roosts, too high for them right now, so I made a smaller, lower roost for them. Will shut them in about 8:30 tonight. I am so nervous about their first night out in the big world!

Hope I did it all right for their sake...

Off the Hook Debbi Nice work.... Are you getting out your sleeping bag??? he he... You could install a camera... (okay so that is over the top)

Thanks guys! I'm so pleased with it! The Amish man that was helping really likes Buckeye chickens. Think I'll find some and hatch some out for him, he would be thrilled! Geebs, sleeping bag?? OY, I'd hate to think I'd wake up looking and feeling like a pretzel!

May move the futon out back though

One dummie still in the coop, she wants nothing to do with the outside...yet. At all times of the day, there is at least one side in the shade, and they can always go under the nest box too. I want Amish Dan to paint me a sign for the coop. My French is very rusty. I want it to say in French; The House of the Marans. From what I can remember, it should be something like: "La Maison de les Marans". Anyone write/speak French better than me that knows if that is correct?

Eveil!! Are you sure they are coming by UPS?? Do you mean USPS (Postal Service)?

TurkeyMountainChickens, I'm already up on that! Got one in the brooder, more eggs coming next week, and more in November! So this coop will be quickly outgrown! May start next month, or when it gets cooler, on the next one! That one should be easier, and BIGGER. It's a shed already there, 10x15 or so, and I can divide it for different projects.
