Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have a question on BCM's I have a hen I hatched last year, I got the eggs from a nice lady at the Marans table at ohio nationals. I breed her with a rooster I hatched from Bargin, the question I have is do Marans carry some kind of dwarfism gene. The reason I ask is that all three of the eggs she hatched out are all of very small stature at first I thought I was imagining things, but now I'm sure that they are banties (I owned no banties of the time) Michele

Ok just out of curiosity is this guy any relation to a Maran?

Its not really important what he is but it would be nice to know. This boy is HUGE. He is easily twice the size of my production reds.

I think that any breed can have dwarfism issues. I think Bev Davis posted earlier that both must have the recessive gene in order for it to show in offspring, but I'm unsure if that holds true with any characteristic. If that is true in this case, you would not want to breed EITHER the hen or rooster, because all off spring would end up with the gene. But again, I'm no expert in these things, for sure.

The boy is no longer with us. The hen I will keep only to show her eggs. Which are a beautiful dark egg. Plus she is very sweet and loves to ride your shoulder. The three little Marans are cute as a button. not as friendly as their mother, but cute. I will try to get pic's but my photo media on computer seems to make my computer crash everytime I open it. I will try though.

if they are banties they are rare and only a fewbreders working on them and i dont know the colors and most importantly i could be wrong on everything lol personaly id love to see a flock of wheaten marans banties running around laying small #4 or #5 gum drops ( i have to work on egg color ) then il shrink them to bantum size

I believe Bev was only referring to the side Sprig.
