Don't like hatching pullet eggs never had good success with them. I usually wait until they have been laying for alteast a month. I also like to wait until each pullet has given atleast 24 eggs to watch for color constistency.
Fluff is not a DQ in any breed that I know of. What do you mean what is my take on the fluff of the wheatie? Sorry only 2 cups of java so far, boot up is slow.

Awe just somethng posted a while back about the unfluff being too light.. I have never seen anything about that.. and now it is a question in everyones head... I don't know what the original post was...It is a few pages back about BC and now the reference has gotten ppl questioning the wheaton one as well... I will see if I can find the post number.

Somewhere on here is no doubt the ?? I'm about to ask but bare with my repeat do BCM raise their own chicks with any kind of regularity??

My 2 year old BC's tried to raise a brood this spring... they fought between themselves who was keeping them.. The chicks were taking a beating so I picked on of them (after losing 2 to stupidity... the hen's not mine) and let one raise them.. She got bored after 2 weeks and abandoned them... 2 got taken by hawks under her "watchful eye"... (NOT!!) and three became adults.. One is my best pullet and a cornerstone for next year... still deciding on the cockerel she raised. And the other cockerel got culled... I rehomed the hen.... (life is too short to own a stupid hen).. ha ha.. She is at my friend's house as a layer.

I would take a silkie or cochin anyday over a marans mama... I have a coming 3 splash Davis bird that is sitting on cochin eggs... She has mostly raised them and had a slight slip and ate two of em... (she is a piece of work too!!! ) AAAACKKK ... My Vote is no.... At least not my pen of retarded parents. I think I am changing her name to H-Annebelle.... Lector

I just wanted to share that we took our blue copper Marans to a youth show this past weekend. I took a pullet (clean legged) and a cockeral (feather legged). They are beautiful birds, though they are only about 4 months old. The cockeral is not fully colored yet. We left the area during the judging and when I came back the pullet had recieved a blue ribbon and the cockeral a red ribbon...I thought maybe due to coloring he got a red ribbon. Later that day I was loading the birds to go home and the "judge" came up to me and said "this rooster is beautiful. Do you know why I gave him a red ribbon?" I said "no". She said "Well, because he has feathered legs!" I proceeded to explain to her that they SHOULD have feathered legs, so she told me to switch the ribbons! Hopefully people become more educated on the breed!

geebs, thank you have been spoiled by my bantys who will sit and hatch 17eggs.

The Jeanne, Presley, and Davis line of Black Copper Marans all have a problem with white wing and tail feathers. The biggest problem with the white is accepting it as normal and ignoring entirely.

Hi Don

I don't think I have seen any pictures of your line yet? How long have you been working on Marans?

Bev
