Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

If you're a member of the club I would think someone would allow you to mail the eggs to them and they would take them to the show. That's what they did for the Wisconsin one. I'm brand spanking new to all of this - learning as I go. Thought I would test the waters by first sending eggs and see how they did. If nothing else, it got my farm name "out there" and got a bunch of orders. Though it wasn't a very big egg competition - it was a huge international poultry show with over 2,000 birds and lots of people, all of whom stopped by the Marans table and saw the eggs - many of them may have never seen or heard of Marans before so it was also good for promoting the breed.

Ruth, If you are looking to see how good your eggs really are contact the Girls that set up the egg table at the Ohio National and send them some eggs. They are with MCCusa club and I am sure Bev Davis can give you the contact info.

They usually post about egg shows - many of the eggs for egg shows are shipped in. Monique (Ruth) is an MCC member, so she'll see the posts regarding egg shows.

Bev has teamed up with Greenfire farms to act as her shipping / hatching agent. I seriously wonder if she is aware of the $26 PER EGG charge . . . . .

Bev is concentrating on breeding new lines and improving old lines. Greenfire has mature marans that she has delivered and is breeding, collecting, hatching, and shipping those chicks. . . .

It is a shame that their prices have gone through the roof this year and have now reached the point of being unreasonable (IMO).

I WISH Bev was still selling. I contacted her right after she started sending her business to Greenfire farms.

There are a some breeders on here that I will be buying from. I was hoping to do it through greenfire because I could DRIVE and pick the eggs up WITHOUT shipping them. I worry about have eggs shipped in from 10 states away

, BUT I will do what I have to do.

I just wanted a reality check to see if I was REAL Offbase with this

Math...a one time offer just for you... I have a Blue Copper Hen (out of Whitmore Farm) who lays a beautiful dark egg. She is bred to a BCM with a nice coloring, comb and size, but lacks leg
feathering, and has a higher tail set than I'd like. She does not have any coppering on her hackles, but was born with a copper spot (as are some of her offspring) on her head, and I'm sure
she is genetically Copper...the pair throws 70% or so feathered chicks and they are turning out very nice...good lacing, nice sized, more coppering..too early to tell egg color on offspring. She
is amazingly productive though, and has been laying since early January 4-6 eggs a week non-stop. Egg color is lighter than in the early months, of course, but still pretty nice.

I am pleased with the pullets hatched from her, not so much with the one roo. If you are looking for better egg color, her offspring may help you here. Email me for pics.
I'm close to you I think, and will give you her eggs laid over the next week or two if you want to make the 2 or less hour drive. Right now I'm enjoying these sunny side up.

I'm not ready to sell these, but the offspring are looking really nice. I know you have Bev's line, and are looking to stick with this, but my girl has got productivy and dark eggs...
and free to you, as you are so close and I need feedback resulting crossing lines.

And..it would be nice to meet a fellow chicken/Marans enthusiast...let me know.

Hi

I think their hatching season has finished now but you could ask to see the egg shells when picking chicks up. If you get chicks at least you know what you are getting, with eggs some might not hatch.

When I first started selling eggs people were getting good hatches from them but something changed in the postage system. I then tried selling chicks but the time I can send chicks out is very short due to it getting too hot. Greenfire Farms seemed the obvious solution, they are within driving distance so am able to take stock to them.

We will be trying to get the birds accepted in February at Newnan, GA. This would be an excellent show for some of you with good looking birds that have good conformation to help the breed by showing. I went to the show last year to check it out and the conditions were excellent and didn't see one sick bird. I am happy to show my birds at this show and take them home again. There will be a lot of other Marans people there and usually chicks for sale.

Hi Ruth

Have you noticed that some eggs have a sort of coating on them and others don't. Some you can wet and get some of the color off and can't with other eggs.

Bev

Bev,

I don't know if you seen my posted pullet... I was wondering about an opinion... I got the quality of red in the hackle per your help... It is still coming in.... What do you think about the overall type??? I look at your birds and try to breed the Wade line to have the same form. The nice long neck, good length of skull, seamless back with good angle... What do you think of my pullet... And you can be completely honest... I will go and find the post number... I am trying to reach uniformity and yours is what I have as a baseline so I am hoping I am getting there.

Hi

They are selling Marans at $12 per chick if I send the order.

Bev

OH! Bev, so we can place an order through you for the reduced price of $12 per chick? Do we just need to PM you to do this? THANKS so much!!

I know you didn't ask me specifically Bev but I have noticed that, mostly with the eggs that have that light purplish chalky hue to them. LoL......I tried scrubbing it off for days and it didn't even make a difference, so I tried sanding it off, this worked.

Oh and they are the hardest ones to try and hatch out.

geebsie, I'm not Bev, but I think I told you this before regarding another of yours...this one looks awful. I would not show her, nor hatch her eggs. I would put her in a shipping box & mail her to me, Express, IMMEDIATELY.

Does anyone have Wheatens from Mark Harrison? I believe Don does, but does anyone else? If so, I'd love to see some pics!
