Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

We are still culling out major color faults... We aren't even to the finery... These are all in "project" stage...Some day 20+ years from now we can work on the smallest infractions as we strive for the supreme example of the breed...

I hope everyone is getting my exaggerated examples... Maybe I shouldn't be posting if it is being misinterpreted to such a degree..

Please advise me folks.. Did I leave ya all in the dust on this one???? It sounded clear in my head when I posted it.

I suggest to all buy or borrow a copy of the SOP, none of the breed club Standards over rule the APA SOP, we can nit pic all we want to but the APA SOP has the only word that matters. Realize when you post a picture the bird may not look as good to some one else. Hey I have got or have had all the faults that are showing up and do not try and cover up the fact.

Nope, I gotcha, geebsie. What I DON'T like in what you said is the light bulb that just went off over my head telling me that the darker coloring that I like so well can equate to eyes that are too dark....and shanks that possibly will not adhere to the proposed standard.

On a fun note, I'm on lockdown for a hatch tomorrow/Sunday that has my experimental eggs from the hen which I THOUGH was mossy (but later Don said she may just have too much extended hackle color) and the awesome roo with too much melaniser. (too dark boy with too light girl). She only laid 5 eggs while I was saving them, and only 3 made it to lockdown...here's hoping all hatch and I get at least one of each sex!

(I've got the new SOP on order.)

ETA: I finally got pics of the girl I thought was mossy - they're probably not great, as I took them INSIDE the coop this a.m. - pitch dark outside, light on in coop, and I had to use the zoom on my camera for a few of the pics, but I'll post them soon.)

Stop the train. I interrupt with a very important message.

I GOT MY FIRST MARANS EGG TODAY! WAHOO!

It is pretty dark and kind of speckled. Pullets are 25 weeks old. I was thinking I might have to wait a lot longer.

I need to go look at eye color, but I think mine are all like the one pictured above.

One of my marans roosters attacked my husband's leg today. I was surprised. Everyone says how docile they are, and so far they all have been. If he keeps it up, his fate will be sealed.

Too Much TOO FAST again !

Is the BEETLE GREEN sheen good or bad ? ?

PUMPKIN eye Color - - - good or bad ? ?

Are we looking for light, medium, or Dark Orage eye color ? ? ?

In myMarans I do not see a correllation between eye,leg and feather color. I have found that the real light colored legs will produced an abundance of white undercolor in the Hackles, No proof but I believe the light leg color means they have wheaten blood in their background. I have culled all the light leg males from my flock. The males were the only ones to show the light leg color. What we must remember is the fact that it is normal for BC to produce all three color of birds.

Don
: would you have "nit picked" (to use your word) my posted picture as much if I had posted a leghorn??? I was showing EYE COLOR It could have been on a german sheperd dog which wouldn't have had a side sprig...

Most people, including judges don't think that is a lot There is 100 pts. to the bird

Walt

Walt, just a question , have you ever seen a chicken win with wrong color eyes or two with different eye color? With most show judging by the comparison method I guess it would be possible. I could see a bird winning in this case but it would not be able to advance to a higher award once the standard is approved.

Thank you Walt... My school of thought here is that for a point it is such an obvious thing... But I guess if that is the only reason for not considering the bird over other choices.. you would be right.. I was thinking from the 1/2 empty glass point of view in that if you have such an obvious deduction... it would only start racking up as the finer things are looked at.. I now see the 1/2 full glass...

I will see if I can find the genetic code material I have been reading relating to the subject regarding what locus etc that controls this... But suffice it to say it has been agreed on by many breeders of poultry. I will post it later.. I need to get away from this for a while...

I believe what I read this morning is located here. I have read it other places...
