Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Feedback on egg color would be wonderful. I just want to know if my girls are laying appropriate colored eggs. These are Cuckoo Marans eggs not BCM. The top row are the Cuckoo's eggs, the middle row are my Rhode Island Reds, and the bottom row are my Easter Eggers. I added the RIR and EE eggs for comparison only. Thanks much!

Well, folks, talk about timing!

She must have heard me complaining. Today when I got home, I had an egg from her! It looks like she's got the bod, but not so much the dark egg production. Here she is, admiring her work:

Here is a better picture of her new comb, or rather, 'tiara', for Mademoselle Madelide:

And, ta-da, the egg:

Do you think the eggs will get any darker? Either way, I love how it's speckled. Sorry for the weird white at the top of my pitures. I'm not sure what's going on with my camera, which is not very old:(

I've had a few that it took a couple weeks before their eggs got dark. I was about ready to banish them...but they DID giving me some nice eggs eventually! The odd thing about the two hens I'm thinking of is that they also LOST their dark color much more quickly than others I have. Interesting.

ETA: LOVE the speckles!

They've only been laying for about a week and a half. The one on the upper left is a double yolker too. I'm not sure if they will get even darker the longer they lay or not.

Well, I would keep & hatch only the very darkest ones you get. They're nice & uniform, which is good! Will be interesting to see if they get any darker as they lay a bit longer.

Has it been hot there? When we were having really hot weather, some of mine were like that. Now that we're back to normal temps, they are back to normal darkness.
