Walt,

The bird I learn about what is bad and what is good about a bird . . . I have too wonder

1.) How long does it take to judge an individual bird ? ?

2.) Do judges have a little check off list, so that they don't forget to look for something ? ?

It takes as long as needed to check all the parts of the bird. Generally a judge is expected to judge 300-400 birds a day. Each judge has a different system, but all the parts of the bird must be checked. After each bird is handled, the judge looks at the class as a whole and keeping the positive/negative points in mind or with notes on the coop cards, a decision is made

Tracy,

I have absolutely NO EXPERIENCE with cuckoo marans . . . so I can not help.
However, I can learn. TODAY, I am a real slow learner due to a lack of SLEEP.

SOMEBODY - - - Jump in here and explain to me what I am looking at . . . ARE they all cuckoo marans? ?

I see two fluffy white ones, three light stripped ones, one dark stripped one and a BLACK one with spots.
What is the rule suppose to be for sexing these little ones and why is there so much variation?

PERSONALLY, I like the one in the last picture WAY to the RIGHT that has white feather feet, white chest and black the rest. . . It is unique - -like me - - and that is why I like it ! !

Chicks, I have one that throws an egg this color once every 2 or 3 months. The rest of the time they are darker like about a "5".
I wouldn't judge anything on her darkness until she has been at it a couple of weeks.

SHE is PRETTY... If her egg color isn't dark enough - - - time to find a roo out that came from a "DARK" egg. We BOTH might know somebody close to you that has OR had extra bcm roos that are about the same age as your little girl . . .

(Sorry, everyone - - this is a PRIVATE joke between chicks and me).

I have a nice Roo that I would be glad to put out there for stud service. . . . I would be glad to trade stud service for about a dozen eggs from this pretty girl - - - OH NO - - that Dang incubator is STUFFED FULL right now - - - 36 eggs in there as of tonight.
Maybe that sweet little leghorn of yours will be willing to go broody again

Good Lord! I had to go ALLL THE WAY back to find this again to quote it - this is a fast thread! And who knows where those nice dark-egg roos went! Probably someones crock pot

I can't wait to see if her eggs darken up. A stud service trade is indeed a possibility. Not sure how we would coordinate that, but I would love to get some fertilized eggs from her. We'll take the two of them to a seedy motel somewhere between here and there......

Good luck with the incubating! I've got my hands full for now with the Leghorn's babies, and she is an excellent Mama, believe it or not. We'll see if she goes broody again.

OK - - I am calming down. I can make bags - - that should be a SNAP.

What do you do - - - one egg per bag or all the eggs from one hen in the bag? ?

Do you put something for structure in the bag so that the chick doesn't suffocate with the bag wrapped around it ? ?

How big do you make the bag ?
?

So what is your desire? Are you looking for birds that show copper or are you looking for birds that will not show copper?
Also, do you have some photos of the birds to share? Photos may help others give you advise and opinions.

Hi Becky,

Seems like we came to a lull in the activity! That's what I would do. How much coppering in the hackles does your one blue hen have? Are you aiming for blue coppers? If so, I'd say breed her to the BCM roo. If both hens came from the same hatch, then the other hen will be carrying the copper gene too, if they were from the same breeding. You could breed her to the BCM or the Splash. If you are aiming for a darker blue color, I would go to the BCM with both hens. That's just my thoughts on it, and I have NO experience with the blues...yet! I'm sure Pinkchick or Bev will pop in here and correct me, and give you some better advice!
