Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Cackleberrycoop, thank you for the additional shots of the roos. . . .
You have some variety there and I have NO IDEA how that could happen

The first hen is really pretty and easy on the eyes.
The roos are total opposites of each other. The first one has a better tail and body, BUT his hackle and saddle color is too light. It is approaching the "straw" color that is a DQ in shows. The second roo has better / darker color but the body, tail, back are not nearly as nice as the first roo.

You being delighted is all that counts.
I have non show quality everything. . . . and I am very happy with my flock.
My birds think I ROCK and I feel the same about them

Dh says my birds live in the Ritz compared to our friends birds.
We insulate their coop for the winter, make sure they are eating a proper diet, and inspect them on a regular basis for lice, mites, etc.

Ha Ha! Thanks for trying to sort out my genetically challenged Marans flock! When I bought them, I made myself swear that I would not get caught up in this, yet another breed; they were for their heartyness and egg color only!!! But of course, I have fallen totally in love with the giant darlings and began puzzling through the breed info (well, lack of info) in my head till it began to hurt. I'm glad that I finally broke down and asked for outside, expert help! Now I can go back to enjoying them simply for what they are and back to drooling over the photos of all the marvelous birds on this thread. Thak you all for chiming in; I've larned so much.

Thank you...you guys and gals ROCK!!!!!!

It is just sooooo sad. They truly are very special and wonderful people. I am hoping for the best possible outcome.

PINK

If you are not too stressed at the moment - - will you tell me what kind of signs to watch for that indicate egg boundness ? ?

How old is your hen that is suffering with this ?

Have you crossed any Wheaten Ameraucanas with them to make Wheaten Olive Eggers?

Pink- Oh my! Words cannot capture the feelings that run through you at a time like this. I've been in a similar situation, not perhaps not as intense as what you describe.

Please know that my prayers are with that family and you.

Pink, how has that horrible situation turned out? Has it been resolved?

CPartists, yes, thats my second choice roo. He's okay, not near as beefy as I would have liked, but he's still young yet. The girls I have are pretty beefy, so I hope the next generation will "beef up". Not getting any marans eggs right now from them or the cuckoos. I have 3 big big cuckoo girls, and have hatched about 10 chicks from him and the cuckoos, but havent tried any olive eggers yet.
