Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

To me it's the influence of the duckwing pattern....

My thoughts exactly, but I personally think it could be a combo of lack of melanizers and perhaps the partridgey stuff popping up and with a lack of melanizers it would make perfect sense to me why it doesn't cover in some. I believe that the birds that do not mature out of it as geebs describes are the birds that are lacking melanizers and the birds that do mature out of it are birds that show us that they do have some melanizers. Am I silly to think this and does it even make sense? I can't seem to spit it out the way I see it in my mind.

Good luck with your hatch! Check on here again, there seems to be more than a few Wheaton folks here. Now whether or not they sell or swap eggs, I don't know. You are not alone in the Wheatons!

Heh heh, make that Wheaten! Can you tell I don't breed them??

Good day all,

I don't have any Marans - yet! This thread is one I read regularly, and I am seriously considering the area to see if I can make more room for yet another coop/run. I have learned a lot here already, though my approach is from the hobbyist angle, not the pro breeder one.

I enjoy the chit chat too, makes you all seem like real people!

I tried Wheatens, but both roosters I had were MEAN. I also contacted another breeder in attempts to find one that would not attack me each time I looked at him...they said that their Wheaten roosters were not always gentlemen either. I now have five wheaten girls with no boyfriend. Such a shame! Wheatens are just beautiful!
