Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Can't post photos yet as I am so new, but check out my Avatar.
This is Blue Boy, my Blue/Copper He is a true "Southern Gent! More about that later, just wondering what the opinions of him are as far as coloring, comb etc.

Thanks!

OMG- - I think I just figured out what I did wrong when I was trying to feather sex my chicks OMG

Lisa~ You are very welcome but remember this is not an exact science it is just what works for me. I have been stumped once or twice, chasehope will testify to that.

Thel next thing I watch for is shoulder feathers, combs and wattle developement. In my birds the females tend to grow in their shoulder feathers faster than the boys. Will try to post more photos of them next week or before they go to their new homes to see if I am right.

Lisa~
Will have to get adult or older bird toe photos for ya later today if time permits or Sunday. Grabbed these chicks because they are within arms reach.
Normally all of my babies and birds have nice long toes, but the outer toes should not be as long as the middle. That said I got a baby this time around from Chloe a blue copper Davis pullet and Gnarles my Davis boy that has very short outer toes and very heavily feathered with feather stubs on the very end of the middle toe. This is the first for me with stubs on the middle toe.
They hatched on 1/1.
This is the Davis baby. Included a photo of their wings too and I am guessing gender by the length of the primaries and secondaries. I think this is a pullet. We will see.

This is a Bill baby, nice long toes. I also believe this is a boy, wing photo, I'm guessing by the shorter secondaries. Again we will see.

This helps me alot too thanks pink!!!!!!

I am calling your first one a male.... You know your line better than me but based on face color and foot size... (just guessing) Feather sexing only works if someone has worked on breeding the shorter wing feathers for males... I have been working mine an still get mixed results.

I have to wait until we have larger photos of him........go to uploads in the blue bar near the top of the screen and click on it, to upload you browse your photos, pick the one you want and open and submit. Copy link either thumbnail or image (image is best, they are bigger and allow us to see more) and paste link in your reply or post.

No FAIR PINK!! Those marans babies are soo cute, they could pass for cochins.

Combs with side sprigs.

And yes, you CAN break egg eaters. It takes a ton of diligence on your part, but I had a few at the same time, and I was able to get them broken of eating eggs. Took me about 2 weeks.

Y'all have been so busy on here! Loved all the pics!

I've been studying the chicks that I hatch out for these specific traits and I have had great luck with it, I'm breeding the birds that I have sexed this way in hopes of breeding for this trait, so far, I'm happy with the results.
