I think I just had a complete and total change of plans. I was planning to build 5 separate little breeder houses and 5 runs off these with chain link dog panels.

This is the barn that blew down last summer. Only the back half blew down. We were going to demolish the whole thing, but in giving the whole thing some more thought, I think it would be a better idea to use this for all of my breeder pens. The upper roof you see in the picture is totally gone. The back wall that you can't see is mostly gone. I'm thinking I could reinforce the front part of the barn that is still standing and has the roof on it to use for a year-round coop. It would end up being about 8' x 40'. I would have to put some smaller doors in where the little doors are in front. I could use my dog panels to build the runs off of this. The openings and runs would be facing south, which I think would be good for our weather. If I only make my pens inside about 4' deep, I could then have a 4' walkway the entire lenth inside.

What do you think? One big house better than 5 little houses?

Hi, I think that's a great idea! I'm a huuuge fan of upcycling and repurposing. I am not too far from you and understand the benefits of the south facing to protect against the Midwest winters. Do you get lots of wind down there? Where I am there is nothing to stop the North winds so it gets brutal sometimes. Anyways, the one question I had was how far it is from your home? The reason I ask is if you would use it for year round housing, would it be relatively easy to get to in winter snows?
I can't wait to see what you do with it!

Hi Bev - I was so looking forward to being there and showing birds but I was mostly looking forward to getting to meet everyone. However, my daughter is due with her first child around that same time and I can't risk not being here. Now if I could only get over this darn pneumonia so I can be with her when she's ready to go. But, if you knew me you'd know I'm just as likely to hop on a plane and fly there at the last minute (if she's had her baby by then). Do they allow last minute entries? How many chickens are you allowed to carry onto a plane? Maybe I can just go alone simply so I can meet everyone I've come to know through the "business".

Hi

The females might be nice to show if they are in good condition and fit the standard more or less, there is always going to be something that isn't right. It's that something that keeps the interest there and makes us breed for better birds.

A qualifying meet is a good oportunity for us all to meet together and chat. It's also good for people who are showing for the first time. There will be a lot of people that they can learn from at chat about Marans. It's also good to be able to compare birds.

I'll look forward to seeing you there.

Kind regards

Bev
