Ummmmmm............a loop of intestine? Did the bellybutton thing not finish closing all the way? Is it bleeding?

No, looks like an umbilical hernia. Inside of shell was very pink, but not bloody. No bleeding, but it sure doesn't look good. The batteries are dead in the camera, new ones charging. Put some antibiotic ointment on it. Tried to reduce it gently, but no go. Afraid of doing more harm than good. Chick seems ok though, so guess I'll just wait and see?

Debi how large is the protrusion? I've read where a small one may take care of itself, but if it is very large there is not much hope. I hope it is a small one.

About between 1/8 - 1/4 inch long. Chick is up running around like nothing is wrong.

I'll be back later, need to get the other bator and brooder going. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

That's not very big. I think I would leave it alone, see if it is absorbed spontaneously.

Anyone else out there with experience with these? If I remembe correctly we had a chick years ago like this, and it did go ahead an get absorbed naturally.

Just watch it and I bet you it will be just fine.....don't let the other chicks see it or peck it and they will if they see it. You sparked up your other bator so if need be you can put it in there while you watch it.

I put a bandaid on one once, and when the bandaid fell off, it was gone.

Hey Debbi,

I have had a few of those in my years hatching. The bigger ones usually don't end up making it, but the smaller ones I just leave be and have had really good luck with it correcting itself. I will leave them in the incubator a bit longer than the others if it is taking a bit of time too. I hope it all work out for your new baby!

Today is a bit colder, makes me realize how quickly one can adjust to warmer temps and how even more quickly one can lose tolerance to the cold. Chores were one of those mad dash events this morning.

Today will be an inside day for the most part...starting more seeds and working at updating my breeding/hatching records for my birds. What are some of the ways you guys keep track of all the info you need...and what info do you find essential? I love hearing other's ways of doing things. It helps me think through things and make sure I don't miss anything.
