and they are WAAAAAAAYYYYYYY friendlier than the Wellies. Wellies are not snuggly birds like the Marans and Barnevelders are. They are more independent but they are socialable birds, they just do not care for being picked up to often like I can with the other 2 breeds.
As far as egg color consistency....The Wellies have it hands down. The Marans are better layers than the Wellies when they are in their groove, but if they don't have their groove on the Wellies beat them in this dept too (except during molt).
Barnevelder eggs that I just got from Farmer Johan. They are darker than the ones that I got from him last year and darker than the Barnie eggs from my one and only Johan girl that I have now, so you can see how they vary in colors too.
All 3 together. Wellies in the very back of the photo, Barnies in the middle and of course you know what the others are.
